Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been around but some of you may remember I haven't been myself for a good few months due to illness and nearly losing my life. I had to part with Albert in Dec last year as I was finding things very difficult, little did I know then I was very poorly. I found him a wonderful home and then a week later ended up in hospital for a month due to Graves disease and thyrotoxicosis. My girls, Pheobe and Emma were being cared for by my husband but not being ridden. Great my girls were ok! Since then (mid Jan) I have battled for my life, had radiotherapy and thyroidectomy and now recovering. Heart wrenching enough to part with Albert but now I know I just cannot cope with two horses, my graves disease is making sure of that! Any choice is hard but I have decided that Pheobe will stay and I have to find a new home for Emma, gawd this is hard and I apologise for the very long winded post but my heart is in my mouth!! Its a terrible decision!
I have a good idea of what Emma is worth but due to the present market value, I have no idea. Bearing in mind that an exceptional approved home is required for her. Would it be ok if I gave you her details so that you could help me with the price to advertise her??
Many thanks
Anita

I'm so sorry you've found yourself in this situation but a big well done to you for realising that its the kindest thing for both you and your beloved horse. Not sure how much help i'll be but your more than welcome to send details my way

Thanks, in answer to your questions, loaning is not an option as I need the extra cash to put my other girl on part livery instead of DIY.
Its been a hard decision between my girls but I have thought it best that Emma should have a new home.
Emma will be 5 in May 2010, currently standing approx 16hds sired by grade a Loughehoe Guy out of Colleen Diamond (superb breeding and currently sort after) broken last year and brought on slowly, fantastic temperament and easy to do in all respects. Superb natural jump and will pop 1m for fun. Schooled over coloured and cross country jumps. Beautiful movement and paces, sound with no vices. Not done much since Dec due to bad weather and then my ill heath. Approx value would help please in this current climate. Thanks so much

ha ha.....now here's Emma riding Emma! Yes that would be funny. I haven't advertised her yet, can't bring myself to do it at the moment but know I will have to in the next few days, just need a rider to show her off as I'm still too weak for anything above a trot.

No idea on the value but just wanted to say that i'm sorry to hear the circumstances behind the sales of both horses. It must have been very hard.

I have arthritis and find it very tiring with just the one horse. They are amazing therapy from life let alone medical difficulties and help to keep us sane!

All the best and keep us updated x

I'm really sorry to hear you've been so poorly.

Can you not keep both due to cost, or because you can't ride, or both?

If you keep them at home, could you not get some help in to do your 'jobs'?
My friend does that for another friend who has cancer. She doesn't get paid the minimum wage but she's not bothered, she sees it as a way of getting out and keeping a bit fitter than she would be.

If you're thinking of paying DIY, maybe the same amount of money could be spent on help.

Thanks for your replies, I still don't know what to do!! As I keep my girls at home and let Emma go then I would need a companion for Pheobe so she isn't on her own. Aaaarrgghh my head is a mess!!

I thought you was going to move Phoebe on to Livery, hence needing money from sale of Emma?
If I was closer, I would come sit on her for you, so you could at least get some pics done.
I really feel for you, it must be such a tough decision! I must admit, as much as I long for my own horse, having to make this sort of decision would certainly not be something I would want to do!!
Put her up for sale, and see what reponse you get. You may be suprised, and get a lovely person who wants whats best for Emma, and will oove her as much as you do!
{{{vibes}}} for you.

Could you get a couple of sharers to enable you to keep both and still have a say in their future as an alternative? Or loan both so that you don't have to worry about finding livery but still have secure futures for them both?

I'm very sorry to hear about your situation and hope you manage to sort something for your mares soon.

Yes my initial thoughts were to put Pheobe on livery but hubby moaning about cost and can't understand why when we have stables here. I am so very indecisive, I love Emma but know I don't have the energy to ride and exercise 2 horses. I have advertised last year for help but no joy hence I had to let Albert go, if only I had known then that I was ill!! Lack of facilities is also driving me nuts.
Do I do whats best for Emma or have an expensive field ornament? Sorry if that sounds hard but I do have to think about that. Neither of my girls are getting the right work and it makes me feel so guilty.

OK, your OH does make sense! Why pay for livery if you have it all at home, AND he is willing to help out.
Do you really think its fair that all the work you have put into Emma, gets wasted as she stands in a field, or would you rather her go to a loving home where she will be put to her potential?
If it was me... As easy as it is for me to say, as I am not in the position you are, I would sell. That way you can put the energy you do have into Phoebe. If your worried about Phoebe being on her own, Redwings/ILPH/Bluecross etc have plenty of horses/ponies needing homes as companions!!

I'd be looking for a couple of sharers to help out with the care so you don't have to do more than you can manage and with OH for emergencies. If you can keep them at home and would need a companion anyway why sell???

Horses don't know what their potential is, and are normally pretty happy to mooch about a field. They don't dream of competition wins. If you can get enough help to enable you to care for both until you are fitter then why not keep them and pick up where you left off when you are ready.

Your welcome! Please do let me know how you get on and what you decide! Remember you don't have to get a small pony as a companion, they often have horses, that just can't be ridden for what ever reason!! Also Bluecross have a sponsorship with a company that help towards general care of their companions i.e. dental, vaccs etc. Check out their website... http://www.bluecross.org.uk/web/sit...&sex=&breed=&colour=&location=&submitted=true

Good luck mate!! {{{vibes}}} for you, Phoebe and the lovely Emma!!

I will never get fully better Katt, there is no cure for what I have. I'm on tablets and monthly checkups for life. If hubby could ride one of the girls, I wouldn't be thinking this way but he is very much a beginner/novice rider so that doesn't help. He looked after them while I was in hospital and when I came out but doesn't want to do anymore than he has to. His words "the horses are your thing, not mine"

I think that is a fair comment from your hubby. He has helped you out when you needed it, but its good that he is not completely taking over - At least this gives you a reason to get up and see to them!!
My OH would help out if I needed him to, but would never expect him to do everything, just so I could ride when I could!! I think you need stable chores to keep you fresh and active!! I miss mucking out!!
