Right, my friends mare is coming home, she's in need of tlc, she was out on loan all summer, then this month came closer to home to a new loan home, unfortunately it seem like this hasn't worked out. A few physiological issues have become apparent and since my friend has a lot on her plate at the moment, I've agreed to care for this mare on a day to day basis and get her fit and healthy again. I've just spoken to her current loaner and the move to her and going lame has taken its toll and she lost some weight, she's now sound and the loaner has her on conditioning feed, conditioning mollichaff etc... So one of my priorities is a diet overhaul as I'm going to be discussing with the farrier the possibility of bf, and either way I'd rather keep her on a good bf diet. Now, my problem is I want to feed her linseed meal, but I don't see her going through an entire bag before the grass gets better etc, and Ben simply doesn't need it. So my question is, is there such a thing as 1/2 a bag? Does anyone sell the equivalent to a half sack of linseed?

you can buy it on ebay etc in a huge range of volumes - it is just usually better value in bigger sacks. (also she might need it a bit longer) if it helps for one on a mug a day (ie maintenance not weight gain quantity :p) lasts 3 months.

Hi guys thank you all, well I've just had a look online, the only 1/2 sack measures I can find cost more than a full sack, so I will probably go for a full sack, sadly no one else at the yard can share it, but she will probably be on a couple of mugs a day so hopefully we should get through it. :)

Never the economical option, I agree, but if you did ever want just a small quantity Natural Horse Supplies sells micronised linseed in 900g packs, Equimins do refill packs of 3kg and Pegasus Health a tub at 5kg. I always go for these as with just one on it and in fairly small dose a 20kg bag would most likely go rancid, esp. as the weather warms.

I had an email through today from Pegasus Health with a code for 25% off - they sell in 5kg & 10kg tubs as well as the normal big sack. The code is Feb25.

Before I discovered Charnwood Milling I used to use Simple Systems micronised linseed and it came in a much smaller bag.

ETA if you do take her bf won't you be feeding it all year round anyway? That's what I do to keep their feet healthy then just reduced the amount in summer :)

I do as Nellrosk does and feed it all year round, adjusting the quantity through the seasons. We are barefoot (and metabolic too).

i buy from Charnwood Milling too.

Question for anyone who buys from farmandpetplace.co.uk.... how do you know their Linseed is Charnwood's product if you dont mind me asking!? It does come up cheaper by £4 or so (delivered) if it is!

If you zoom in to the picture you can see the labelling on the bag. Titmuss local to me sells it at £18 a bag and it is definitely charnwoods as it comes in a branded bag.

I have a feeling that charnwoods supply linseed to many people in the UK ( they produce it) so whereever you buy even if it is rebranded, you are probably buying charnwood.

I have no idea why it is cheaper to buy their linseed from reasonably priced feed shops than direct from charnwood tho', makes no sense unless they don't really want to sell odd bags here and there so they don't price it competitively.
