So I get to the yard this evening, and a horse that is in front of my horses had completely mullered by electric fence energiser! The lady who gets him in said he had pulled all the cover and ripped the wire into his side of the field, I am peeved, but I am worried as to what I should say and how I approach this problem, obviously horse can't go out next to mine, but also I have a broken energiser, what would you do?

Which side of the fence was the energiser on? Sounds like it was on his side and he has played with it. You might be able to ask owner for compensation but really the energizer should be out of reach of horses as it could be quite dangerous.

As a general rule all manufacturers advise that the box should be out of reach of horses as some find them irresistible. If the horse is insured, the insurance should cover this under third party damage so might be worth asking?

Okay its a large field with a straight run of elec dividing it, there is nowhere other than to put it under the fence, half and half, and covered by a large tub trug, up until last friday my 3 horses were seperated by this fence and unit for 4 months with no trouble at all, they have all been respectful of the fence, so the other horse has gone out next to mine since saturday, and this happens! I really don't have the money to buy another one, and I am peeved actually more than peeved, the fencing unit has always been well looked after and I have had lots of years use from it and it was in perfect working order, no this happens and I just know that everyone will say, well you don't know which horse did it and it will be me ending paying!

If the fencer was where the horse could get it, id say the fault is with you im afraid. :(
As someone else said, put it out of reach of the horse if you dont want it damaged.
Mabe you could speak to the yo about fencing/field situation if your horses cant run together.

Sadly I think it is one of those things you will have to just put down to experience, these things happen. As you are on a livery yard you don't have a lot of say as to who goes in a field next to your horse so I suppose you have to decide whether or not to invest in a replacement, you could ask the other owner if she would go halves with you but I wouldn't rate your chances!

Yes, I'm sorry I agree that it's up to you to place the energiser where it can't be reached by the horses.

When you have a replacement, use some temp elec fencing and posts to construct a mini-coral around it to keep it free from prying noses?

This won't help you with the current problem, but if you get another one, we got a heavy steel box (bit like a safe) from a scrap yard and drilled holes in the back for the wires to come through - this would withstand a horse's investigation (and also be really heavy for thieves - which was our problem, the previous one had been stolen..). I know one of my horses would trash it if it was sitting under a bucket too..

Its a difficult one - the other owner would probably say that they didn't want the box there or need it..or as you say, say that you can't be sure which horse did it (which is true).

I understand that people are saying it is my fault for leaving it in reach but I have never has a problem in 10 years with my own horses, i've never even covered it before! but the reason this horse is suddenly next to mine is because I had my old horse PTS on friday and didn't really think there would be a problem, I was more worried about putting my gelding out with my mare for the first time, and the endless calling that he was doing for his long time friend. Then I get asked if its ok for this horse to go next to them for company, and that was ok except the bl**dy twit has ruined my fence unit.

I dont think that you can demand the other livery replaces the unit as it was left where a lot of horses (albeit not yours) would play with it and damage it just as part of being a normal horse, not cos they were being a serial hooligan or unusually naughty.

However I do think that any replacement should ideally be cost split between those benefitting from it ie them and you. If they wont do that then I would make sure that any replacement energiser is either in a heavy inaccessible container, or fenced off away from the horses. By using electric fence gate handles on a couple of lengths of tape you can tape off a triangle of the corner of the field for it to sit in.

But I think also that youve just suffered a big big awful loss and this is probably just the icing on the cake for you right now! so take a deep breath and treat this as a minor 'stuff' thing whereas other things are more important at the mo.

^^^ this.
if this horse is going to be your regular neigbour id approach the owner about going halves on a new one as she's going to be benefiting from its use in future too.
sorry about your horse x

sorry about your horse :-(

I sort of agree with others, but...(if I've understood this correctly) if i were to put my horse out for the first time next to someone else's and they were kind anough to be supplying the fencer i would be noticing where it is and asking to move it out of the reach of my horse. 2 of mine wouldn't touch it, but my youngster would wreck it. so i do think the other owner should take some responsibility.

So not entirely your fault I woud say. maybe the owner of horse will feel guilty enough to offer to go halves on another one. I would.

Good luck.

Susie t..v helpful..not!
Quite understand op's reaction given the trauma of last few days....hopefully a compromise can be reached.

I guess you could mention that you need to buy a new one because one of the horses broke it, I might be more inclined to pay half under those circumstances. Also maybe try cordoning it off by making a little pen round it with electric fencing, horses may find that less interesting than a tub trug

I was made by YO to pay for one when my horse supposedly broke another liveries box. I don't even think it was my horse, he never bothered with anything, but her horse was a very nosy youngster
