Chloe (my mum's horse) is going on permanent loan to a local riding school on Sunday. The school owner's are happy to sign a contract and I'm trying to adapt the BHS one now...

Is there anything in particular that needs adding because she's going to work in the school, rather than private ownership?

They've got liability insurance, but we're going to carry on with the vet's insurance for now as it's too expensive for them to cover all their horses for vets fees.

The other thing is termination of loan - mother doesn't want any clause included that says the school can return her, whereas I think 2 months notice is reasonable, and very unlikely anyway. I'd rather have the option to take her back if I think she's unhappy, and think it's only fair it works both ways

Thoughts?

Thanks

you also want to put a restriction on how many hours a day she can work in the school. and what she can do, ie can clients take her hunting/competing play horse ball.

Also you need to establish what will happen to her if she is off work long term because of illness or injury. Riding stables need to make money off her so they can't afford for her to be out of service for a long period of time - in fact they probably would not have spare stabling to keep her in long term if she is not earning. i have seen it happen far far far too often where the school doesn't call out a vet as they don't want to pay a vets bill. The horse is ill long term - with maybe not a good prognosis so the school sends them back to the owner. So you end up with a damaged horse back. So what would you do in that situation.

And that they replace like with like - not replace a FAL rug with a cheap own brand rug - or a decent leather saddle with a cheap synthetic. And that the replacements become yours - so if the horse has to come home - all the replacement items come home with her

Bit confused by your termination question. Do the RS have permision to sell her or have her pts instead of sending her back if they can't keep her and your mother still doesn't want her? If you own a horse you can't force them just to keep her and pay costs for her indefinitely once they no longer want her (or, at least, I don't think you can).

Echo Bosworth I've seen horses on part-livery doing lots and lots of hours a day and then again in evening in indoor school.

I don't know if normally your horse is in in the winter but if so I would include that.

Good luck

Thanks everyone - some good points there, most of which I think I've got covered. The BHS contract covers the equipment - so I'm just waiting for my mum to make a list of what is going before that gets added.

All the horses in the school are only used for 1-2 hours a day, so no worries on that front, and they don't do any other activities. The most she'll be doing is trotting poles.

If she's unable to work there are 3 options - 1. the school will send her to a retirement farm they use, we've been waiting for a stable for 3 months because there is a pony that's been lame for a year and is due to go there for the summer. 2. I'll take her back somehow and retire her as companion for mine or 3. PTS.

They're stabled all year round as well, with daily turnout with one other horse.

atwork - she's basically being given to the riding school so if she turns out to hate it there then either I'll take her back, or we'll work together to find a new home for her.

If you don't want her back why don't you just sell her?

Because she's 15/16 and we'd like to make sure she's in a decent home for life, not passed on from pillar to post.

The RS couldn't afford to pay much, if anything for her, so I'd rather she went on permanent loan than just be given to them.
She can also be tricky to handle and take advantage of novices, so isn't really a suitable first-time buyers horse, despite being super-safe to ride. Any more experienced person would get bored with her, like I did, as she's reached her limits.

I'd love to keep her for myself but can't afford two in either time or money at the moment
