My mare is very crabby/moody and unco-operative when in season. I was thinking of trying the NAF magnesium suppliment in her feed. Does anyone have any suggestions of the best suppliments/methods of dealing with it? She isn't particularly badly behaved, just harder to bring round to my way of thinking and doesn't work as well :)

No suggestions I'm afraid, but I can sympathise; every time I rug up our old lady she bites me on my bum, she has been throwing her lead ropes at me (the metal bit then hits me in the face, ouch!) calling my gelding over just to try and kick him.. need I go on?

I've got my mare on the global herb supplement called Frisky Mare. She goes a bit loopy when in season and jumps out her field so I'm trying this supplement to see how we get on. I have a friend who uses the NAF Oestress supplement for her mare who has similar behaviour to your mare when in season, it does make a difference to her mare she is calmer and more managable.

Thats exactly what my mare does...comes in season, goes a bit mental and keeps jumping out the field (or over a 5'3 gate from a standstill with her heavy weight rug on!)...

Please could you let me know how the Frisky Mare goes? I tried the Oestress and it made no difference to my mare whatsoever...

Frisky mare plus made a HUGE difference to Nadia when I had her on it. I don't have her on anything now as I did a trial for a year without it and she actually wasnt that bad so I thought I'd save myself the money.

Thats what Bally does too. I've had two expensive vet bills out of it and her lovely legs are now scarred!! :( The first time she caught her legs in the barbed wire, then last time (on Hogmany when I was on holiday!!) she jumped the gate from a standstill, got over it but put her back legs through it and scraped them all it was a mess. Had her on Frisky mare since then, so will see what happens when she comes into season next and will let you know how we get on.

Ive found keeping my mare on magnitude has worked really well, she still has the odd grump when in season but we can work through them - she no longer throws herslf around and goes into a full fledged tantrum :)

The main ingredient you want to look for is Agnus Castus (monks pepper) It is a hormonal regulator supplement used the world over for both mares and stallions, riggy geldings.

Far cheaper to buy it as it is than spending £s on branded products.

Any Magnesium based supplement will only work if your soil/forage is deficient in it.

Hi, I have a moody mare usually worst a few days before her season and seems to come into season more than most even in winter, shes crabby, sensitive and mardy, but i don't stop riding her I just get on with it and ignore her, she is on Stroppy Mare supplement it is natural herbs with lots of different things in it, I'm sure it helps, including the 'monks pepper'
