Another mud fever thread - what else to try?

My heavily feathered cob always has some mud fever but for some reason this year it seems to randomly flair up every couple of weeks.

I don't wash his legs but brush them clean and apply veg oil and sulphur ever week or so. I've also been applying benzyl benzonate when it does flair up as this seems to dry up the scabs and also clears up the raw skin although it seems to sting as he really hates when I apply this so I don't do it daily but a couple of times a week.

In previous years, the oil & sulphur mix has been enough to keep it at bay but not this year. Most of the barrier creams available are no use to a feathered horse - I have muddy buddy barrier cream but trying to apply it to feathered legs just ends up in a sticky mess!

I see that Keratex do a spray but I've heard mixed review - same with all products really!

I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions - specifically for a feathered horse! If it continues to be this bad I'm going to have to consider clipping his feathers off which would be a shame!

Have you tried the Keretex powder, that's more for prevention though than cure so you need to get him clear first then use that to keep it abay, I used Conotrane cream to clear mine up then Keretex each morning before turning out and fingers crossed its never come back. good luck.

I have some of the muddy buddy powder but he has so much feather that I need nearly half a tub to do his legs just once!

Sorry I know it's not what you want to hear, but I think you would probably have to clip the afftected areas to allow the skin to breathe and dry out

Being an Aerosol it's easy to lift the feathers whilst you spray it on to get onto the skin.
