Last night the mare had a ridiculous fit of hooning about while the gelding was out. Totally lathered up so I hosed her off and turned them out. Fine on walking back to the field but a little stiff in front after eating her feed. We put this down to aggravating her mild arthritis (she is 18).
This morning she was dog lame, pointing the toe and almost completely non weight bearing. Swelling round and above the fetlock but not up to the knee. Vet came out, palpated, couldn't find any specific points but did find a little tenderness near the heel with hoof testers. She did flinch with full forward extension of the leg but no other manipulation.
Trying to keep her weight off the heel and the hoof tester sensitivity seem to suggest an abscess somewhere but there was no digital pulse. She did her check ligament about 5 years ago, and it seems odd that she would go suddenly lame immediately after a silly galloping spree over rough ground if it is an abscess. Anyway she is now on box rest and bute, wearing a Robert Jones bandage and will have ultrasound next week assuming something doesn't burst in the meantime. Any thoughts? Would a DDFT or suspensory issue ever present like this?
