a pony at my yard is living out 24/7-been at the yard for over a year-i have been at that yard for nearly 2 months and have not seen the owners of this pony. it was apparentluy baught for their daughter who lost interest. its only 5 now!! the other people at the yard say that he(the owner) never comes up and that it was out all winter with no feed or shelter,or even a rug. problem now is, he is suffering quite badly with sweet itch. he has rubbed the top of his tail off which now has sores on and also much of his mane which now also has sores and sores on his withers too. he has nothing applied to it and not even a fly rug. have spoken to YO who says he will call the owner but nothing seems to have happened. its getting quite distressing for my son who has to look at it everyday!!! i dont want to pester YO as his wife has just had a baby and they are very busy with that. one of the ladies at the yard even offered to loan or buy the pony but the owner wouldnt take it. i dont understand why, its not been out of its field for months! what would you do?

You've got to do the right thing here. Club together get the farrier out sort the sweet itch. In the meantime make the YO aware that he has a duty of care, if he fails tell him he'll be reported. Do you really want this sort of behaviour to be associated with your yard?

However, firstly ease the horses suffering stuff what the law says it's an ass

its so sad - but it seems to be a common problem - even on our yard 99% of owners are there twice a day caring for thier beloved horses - just a small percentage dont seem to bother much - i try to 'mind my own business' but cant!!! i worry and worry about the neglected ones. its a very difficult problem because if you interfere too much then it becomes nasty and maybe the YO would be cross with you interfereing - so sorry cant give you any advise on what to do but sympathise with you as i know how you feel (helpless and ashamed because you know as an animal lover you shouldnt just stand by and watch!) x x

We had this problem a few months ago and found out that not only does the YO have a duty of care but all the other liveries do too. If the problem is reported to the necessary authorities then everyone can be found at fault.

I agree with doing the right thing collectively whilst making the YO aware that it is a temporary solution and that he must get a suitable solution from the owner.

Good luck, I know its horrid to see horses just ignored like this by their owners x

Tell the yard owner to contact the horses owner and get the horse sorted out or you will have no choice but to contact the ilph, bhs or similar charity. Tell them you will give them say 7 days to get the vet or whoever and if they dont then make your calls. A horse left without vet treatment it needs is cruel.

hi if it really is that bad, its time for the ilph or rspca. i would not treat the animal as they need to see it has it is and if it looks like it is getting cared for the problem will not be solved. i guess the yo is getting their livery so they must be in contact with the owner.

Sorry but what in the heck is the YO doing about this? Nothing it would seem - well in my mind they are as guilty as the blooming owners! There is absolutely no way I would not treat a horse on my yard for something like this.....or feed it....and sort out it's feet! Then I would send the bill to the owner. Presumably the owner is still paying the livery money, in which case it is easy for the YO to send them an invoice.

before i moved to go it alone, our YO would not have taken this type of behaviour whatsoever, in fact a girl who left recently was told where to go and YO told her that she should get her priorities right and look after her horse properly. He weaved when stressed and was left in for hours sometimes days when she lived nearer than anyone else and also had no job! the rest of us managed, or she could have called us, but took the easy option of not bothering at all!

Makes my blood boil, dont have a horse if you dont want to put in the time!

Ok, you're obviously not on-line at the moment.

The livery yard owner has a duty of care - as well as the actual owner of the pony.

Point this out - but also contact the ILPH.

Your first port of call is to call the welfare line of the ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses). They will be only to pleased to send their local inspector out to investigate the condition of this horse. They now have the new Animal Welfare Bill behind them so they will be able to take action against the horse owner and possibly the yard owner.
