OK, I have always fed mine small amounts of Baileys Outshine purely for coat shine and they literally gleam on it. As well as this being purely 'cosmetic' I think it helps them during coat change time and makes them a bit easier to clip.

During April my 7/8ths TB dropped off due to the weather and I was advised to put her onto EquiJewel. I had used it on previous occasions when I couldn't get the Outshine but I find that they are not as shiny on it and do lose a little bloom . I did buy it and fed it to her in much larger quantities than previously and wow - her bulk and muscle tone has improved hugely. However as before she has lost a lot of shine so I started adding 75g of micronised linseed and she has started to shine again.

She will soon not need the EquiJewel for bulk but it does seem to work very well to develop muscle and she does need this as she finds it hard to build and maintain muscle even in correct work.

I have been reading lots about the adverse effects of feeding soya oil and Outshine is soya and linseed combined. I've contacted Baileys who sent me a fact sheet and say soya is actually good to feed.

I am now confused about what to do next - options are:

Continue with small amounts of Outshine and not be concerned about soya.

Above plus add a Equimins Muscle Toner to the TB which does actually contain a form of rice bran oil ( which EquiJewel is ).

Lose the Outshine and stick to EquiJewel and Linseed - is this a safe combination?

Oh dear, head is swimming so all thoughts appreciated

Thank you

Well I feed my tb soya oil for general condition and she literally gleams on it, you can practically use her as a mirror! :)

I have never had any adverse effects of feeding soya oil, only had positive results! It sounds like you will be feeding small amounts anyway for general coat condition. It's only if you are feeding larger quantities you need to worry about adding other supplements etc..

Have also had great results using sunflower oil in the past! Plus it's all much cheaper than outshine ;)

Have you tried just the linseed without the other supplementary feeds? - it's a horsey 'superfood' with a good balance of micronutrients and gives a fab shine to the coat.

Thank you guys.

ImmyS your tb looks gorgeous! Mine do shine like that too on the Outshine so it must be a soya oil thing. However I am reading more and more about how it works on the pancreas and that it can lead to insulin resistance, I must admit a lot of the reported health issues say that if the soy beans are cooked or heated during the process then some of these issues are negated. The forms of soy in Outshine should technically be ok as it is an extruded nugget & therefore goes through heat processes.

Catkin yes I have tried linseed on it's own and although they shine it's nowhere near the gleam they get on Outshine and if I try to add enough to help with muscle tone my TB won't eat her feed. I can add a maximum of 2 spoons per meal which is roughly 75g.
