I have recently given a home to a pacer. She is a lovely horse, wonderful nature and very chilled out.
She has come to me through a rescue centre so no one is too sure of her history.
She has been hacked out around the grass tracks and off road but its getting to the point where i will need to go on the road.
Anyone with an pacer - what are they like with traffic? I dont know if she has road or track raced, she was rescued from a sale in very bad condition and not from a place where questions like this could be asked... :(

Every horse is different, but Ned (Who we also don't know the full history of, but we believe he's road raced) he's a star in traffic. He'll do spectacular spooks at a baby squirrel crossing this path, but won't bat an eyelid at a herd of tractors/motorbikes or anything like that. The only time he really spooked at traffic, he fell over and I fell off! But it took us both by complete surprise. A van had a small, poorly attached trailer that wasn't visible until it was pretty on on top of you! It bounced in the air and came crashing down, he spooked, lost his footing and slipped, I rolled off the side. It was a genuine fright for both of us!

Anyway, I kinda went off on a tangent :P Good luck with your new horsey!

i think horses that have been driven are generally a bit better in traffic and will listen to your voice better, but a friend of mine has a standardbred and she got very confused with traffic coming towards her (as they all go the same way on the track she hadnt seen them coming the otherway before) took her a while to adjust but shes ok now -except bikes shes not keen on those!

Depends if it has been trained on roads.

Mine was the best horse I've ever had in traffic. Would take him anywhere. He was scared of funny coloured rocks tho and had clearly been a 'city boy'.

Nature frightened him but thundering traffic not a problem so don't think can generalise really. Depends where they have been trained.

Oh and get the trotting poles out if you want to improve the non pacing pacers. Worked wonders for mine.

I miss him.

I've got one too! Most bomb proof in traffic I've ever ridden! Trotting on the roads, he just wants to go but he's getting better :-)
They need a lot of work to turn them into a riding horse, but I'm sure you know this. Mine is still a work in progress :-)

My pacer is an absolute saint in traffic. Like the first replier said, she is usually a super spooky little witch.. but nothing phases her in traffic. Absolutely nothing.

It really depends on the horse, my pacer was generally ok but had his off days. It was suggested to me by someone to try riding him in blinkers as thats what they are used to, i could see the sense in it, though never actually got round to trying it.
