Hi, just wondering if its safe to keep rabbits on the same straw you would use for bedding in a horses stable? Well known chain of Pet stores charges over£5 for a small amount whereas I can get my hands on a large bale for £1.50 at the stables. Could it harm the bunnies tho?
Thanks!

they'll be fine, its no different, just keep an eye out for mites and things but its a tad unlikely that would happen if its good quality straw.
hope that helps x

I was always told it is better to bed rabbits on hay than straw, as the straw stalks can be too stiff and ungiving, potentially able to cause eye problems (straw pokes into the eye). Pet-store straw is usually cut into smaller sections, reducing its rigidity. We always put hay in our rabbits' cages.

Rabbits should be fine. Back in the day my rabbit was bedded on straw that I bought from the riding school.

Nowadays my children's rabbits are bedded on hay that I buy from the livery yard we're on.

My sister's daughter's rabbits however, have packaged bedding hay to sleep on and packaged 'forage' hay (twice the price no doubt) to eat !! LOL do the rabbits know the difference? I think not.

I paid £3 for a small rectangular bale of hay and it's lasted 6 months and my sister probably pays out £3 per week at least for the pre-packaged stuff

Thanks for all the replies! Its shocking the mark up this Pet Shop makes on evrything, will put them on hay bed as the stalks are definatley longer on the yard straw than on prepackaged stuff.

ya that is fine as long as it is wheat or barly and not oat coz that give them the runs plus look out for mites use shavings it is so much easy!

can't see it being a problem , we used to keep 4 rabbits in a stable together on horse straw, never poked their eyes out or caused any ill effects.
