Sorry for the major amount of posting, but while im on here i may as well...
my 10 yr old gelding who ive had for 2 months who has done a lot of competing has rep. strain syndrome in his left fore fetlock, ive been reommended cortisone injections. its only since i havent been riding him on an all weather surface (just in the field) Everyone thinks i should sell him because it will be ongoing...have you ever had any experience with this and will it always affect him?

If he has had a hard life then maybe it will be an ongoing thing but your vet would be your best advisor. Did you have him vetted prior to purchase? The ground is really bad at the moment everwhere so you may find it improves when the rain comes. He may just need careful management.

Incidentally I would love to know how "everybody" thinks you will be able to sell a lame horse, and that this is a right or fair thing to do. "everybody" doesn't always know best. Stick to your vet if you trust them and do what is right for the horse in the future.

As for cortisone injections they helped one of ours when he had inflamation in his foot but they are only a temporary solution I think. We had to stop after 2 as he was showing slightly low grade laminitis signs which can be a side effect.

i know...its just lumping the problem on someone else, leading to his potential suffering even further. No he was not vetted, he came from a highly reputable stud farm and had a 5 stage a couple months before - ive got the certificate.....but am now regretting not having it done...extremely regretting it....
My vet thought it wasnt his fetlock but something back related...but to check he was going to do nerve blocks and then a bone scan. But we had a very good chiropractor who came highly recommended out and he said his back was fine but its just minor strain on the fetlock... I have no idea what to do

I am so sorry for you, hindsight is a wonderful thing:( Maybe it really is only a minor problem and it will fix itself. Good luck whatever happens and I hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

Are you sure its repetitive? Did the owners tell you? If its likely to be temporary then why not give him a month off and see if he comes sound? I would only go for the injections as a last resort. My lad had one for a chipped nav bone. He was about 3/5ths lame before getting it and a day later showed major improvement. He came back into work slowly and after a few months was completely sound. Sometimes the injection doesnt work though it depends on the horse as to how long it lasts, mine lasted over a year and my vet said it can variy from 2 months -2 years!!

I don't know anything about your horses condition or likely outcome but my 15year-old pony had the injection in his knee for bone chips/fragments only 3 months after I purchased him. I had him fully vetted and he passed with flying colours and yet after only light work for 3 months he was lame. The injection in his case was only temporary and as soon as even light ridden work was introduced months later he was lame again within a week. Not sure if I was 'conned' into buying him inbetween this type of injection but that's my only conclusion other than bad luck, as blood tests showed no pain killers present. Had to give him away and lost over £2700 in less than a year as he had other issues as well and I really didn't like him. I didn't want to spend another six months having a stronger injection but I probably would have tried if I'd had him a long time and was fond of him. Your vet will be the best person to advise on the long-term outlook. Good luck.

I would have a proper lameness work up done so you know exactly what the problem is. A repetitive strain injury is not really a proper diagnosis.

we had the vet back out and he's convinced its his back/shoulder...really not sure. Hes going in for nerve blocks and bone scan as he said that 'assuming its rss' is not getting down to the problem and cortisone will just put it off not cure it, leading it to potentially get worse over time. He's cost an awful lot of money this blinking horse...he'd better be worth it!
