There's a nice TB on our yard, stressy, but polite and good natured. We stable in a barn, with brick boxes down the sides, built up to the ceiling, and more open boxes in the middle with bars from halfway up.
TB has been in the brick boxes.
Couple of weeks ago, owner decided to paint his stable, so moved him temporarily into an empty box in the middle of the barn with grills on all 4 sides.
From the word go, TB stopped weaving, whinnying, box walking, sweating up and just stood touching noses with his neighbours, munching his hay and generally looking around and watching everything going on. Different animal, he looked so happy and calm.
So I asked the owner's friend if he was going to stay where he was since he was such a changed animal and obviously so happy where he was. 'Oh no', came the response 'she (owner) doesn't like those boxes'
To which I replied 'oh, of course. I mean, since when were we in this game for the good of the animal.' Adding, as I walked off in disgust 'I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my life'.
Is is just me??
Don't know why, but this has just enraged me.

I think i would feel the same as you. The poor horse abviously like to be able to see what is going on, not be looking at 4 brick walls with only a door to look over!!

that is very frustrating, having been the owner of a stressy TB for many years - as soon as i put her in a stable the same as you have described she was totally different. when i had to move yards i chose one specifically like it as i knew it would keep her happy rather then an isolated brick stable! she was so happy in it, even during her 8 months box rest! why oh why would you choose to do all of the extra mucking out that comes with the stressing!! madness!

i agree with you. but maybe you could of been polite and advised him that you think the horse was better off in the middle boxes? sometimes people dont always see, what outsiders/other people see! Might be worth you having a chat with him again?

You are probably right. I think I just blew my stack a bit. Might suggest it again, a bit more reasonably...

my main priority is that my horses are kept settled. I wouldnt rest going home at night if my horses were left in a pickle like that ! Silly girl and poor horse !

I thought the idea was that the horse choose the stable it was comfortable in NOT the owner!!!!

Maybe you could gently point out that she doesn't have to live in the stable but the horse does so his opinion is more important in this instance..... If that doesn't work, graffti her nice newly painted stable with what you think of her and it migh encourage her to move out!!
