Another road casualty. *link contains distressing image*

It has got to be 1000 to 1 where a horse causes a road incident and damages a car etc surely?

Perhaps drivers might take more care if the horses were ok and the riders were killed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bet the authorities would do something then .......

I do see where you're coming from...but I'm not so sure, particularly when considering the people or animals involved rather than the mode of transport... I've lost count of the number of motorbike accidents myself or people I've known have been lucky enough to walk or be hauled away from with a pulse - or not as the case might be... Not one car driver in any instance was injured...

If you're on the roads, with the potential to be on the receiving end of a car/van or whatever - you're in a much more vulnerable position full stop... There's an accident fatality hot spot on the B road leading into the village where I live - nothing's changed over the years... It still has a 50mph restriction and is still used as a race track...

I think this is a good idea. People need to be aware of this. My childhood pony was hit by a car and killed because someone came flying round a corner and hit him from behind.

The girl in front gallopped back to the yard for help (only 50m or so from accident) and Smartie was dragging his very broken back end down the road because he didn't want his mate to leave him! Beyond horrible!
 
I would like to say how sorry I was to hear about this tragic accident which resulted in the death of Ruby.
The fact that there where double white lines on the road means that the driver of the vehicle should have slowed down and waited until they had passed over the brow of the hill before attempting to pass the horses.
Riding horses on the roads has become increasingly more dangerous as drivers have become more impatient and less courtious, cars have become more powerfull and drivers fail to understand that the vehicles they are driving are potentially killing machines.
Only 22% of rights of way can be used by horses and most of them do not link to form off-road circuits. There where about 26 fatal road accidents involving horses reported last year with another 95 less serious accidents.
May I ask any horse rider that has an accident or near miss on the road to report it on the www.horseaccidents.co.uk web site
I very much hope that the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) will recommend that the police prosecute the driver that killed Ruby and my advice would be that the owner/rider of the horse takes out a private civil prosecution against the owner/driver of the vehicle that killed Ruby.
