Dear All

Please could someone explain how a seat size is decided for a rider? I thought that the leg measurement was taken but I see plenty of tall skinny people who have long legs that aren't sliding around in a massive saddle?! Is it actually all about the derriere?!

The saddles differ if you are male or female too - probably best if you get a saddle fitter out so you can play around with all types. Jo Beavis at the National Saddle Centre is excellent -If you call her she explains all the complexities there and then on the phone with no obligation...

It is determined by the distance between hip and knee. However, the saddle must fit the horse too, so if you need an 18" and the horse can only fit a 17" then it has to be a 17" although you wont be comfortable and will be creating all sorts of pressure points for the horse.

It also depends on the style of the seat and the flaps - so many variables really, not just one factor to consider.
