It’s probably just the horrible time of year but a lovely yard has come up in my area - I’m thinking about moving my horses but can’t make up my mind!

At the moment, I have a field to myself. I’m pretty happy there but it has no water, electric (or any other facilities!) which is reaaaally getting me down in this wind and rain. Lack of stables isn’t too much of a problem, it’s having to take water from home that’s really killing me. And having to carry hay right the way to the only dry part of the field, which is of course the furthest bit away from the gate :) Hacking ok although mainly on the roads. Yard costs £140 per month & is 1.5 miles (5 minutes) away from home so can walk there if it snows etc.

Yard 2 has just come up to rent. Has water and electric, along with 3 mahooisive stables. Place to store feed, trailer, hay etc. under cover Off-road hacking from the door. But, it is waaay more expensive at £260 per month & is about 3 miles from home (only 10 minutes in the car but not realistically walkable). I’m also thinking that to make it worthwhile, I need to use those lovely stables, which would restrict me a bit more than now when they’re out 24/7. On the other hand, there’s enough land that I wouldn’t have to poopick in the winter at least, which would save me a lot of time compared to where I am now, where I have to pick up every last ball of poop.

What d’you think – should I stay or should I go?!

Thank you! xxx

I would move, electric, water and stables and off road hacking!!! As for the distance from home, 3 miles really isn't that far if you really needed to walk it.

move! i can't believe you pay £140 and don't even have a water supply. if you can afford it, it does sound well worth the money

Definitely move. I don't know how you are coping now. Stables will be handy even if just to bring them in and tack up/groom in the dry. If there is enough land you could always try to find a livery/ someone to share the cost

If you can afford it move, still very close to home and even if you don't use the stables all the time(I don't) if you can set it up some how so they can go in and out as they please then they can use them as shelters and your not tied to having to go up twice a day, muck out etc. it sounds lovely. Also would the new place reduce price to say £240 then its only £100 a month extra.

I'd move really if you can afford - I'm a firm believer it's supposed to be fun and for the money you're currently paying I'd at least want running water. I couldn't manage like that.

I'd move!

If it snows and I can't get the car out the drive - I walk to work and that's three miles - takes me about 30 mins, but then I am old and fat! So bearing in mind how often it snows, it's probably worth it for 2-3 days of walking per year.

Oh blimey, that's a surprise. I thought you'd all say stop whining & stay put :) Doesn't it seem a lot of money - works out about £60ish a week..? I thought I was getting a bit of a bargain where I am but people seem to think £140 p.m. is a lot. Decisions decisions! Mind you, I've just got back from doing the horses - poopicking by torchlight and sloshing water into my boots - those beautiful stables are calling me..! xxx
