Just wondering is it absolutely necessary to have a navy velvet hat with flesh strap? My old one is not up to the new standard. The latest hats seem to be €€€ and i have only recently replaced my skull and dressage hat. The only time I will wear the navy hat is the couple of low level shows I do during the summer. Alternative is a cheaper navy velvet hat without the flesh straps or even a navy velvet cover for my skull cap. The velvet collar on my jacket is olive.. Is this a no no also?!

Based on what you're saying then no a navy velvet with flesh strap is not essential! If you're looking to qualify for HOYS then the right gear is important but if you just want to go out and play at a few low level shows then I really don't see the point in spending your money, a good horse at a local show should do well irrespective of the style of your hat!
I would look to wear whichever of your hats is the most conservative and traditional. Depending on the style of the dressage hat I would probably err on the side of getting a velvet cover for the skull cap that matches the jacket (if you can match to the velvet collar even better) but please don't wear the cover with an eventer-style pointy-uppy peak!

My hat isn't up to the new standard but all the showing societies have extended their use until 2017 so i can still wear mine this year. Which is good because it's only a year old!

I think the wrong hat really ruins the overall picture, but if you only do a couple of showing shows a year i see your point :)
