I pretty much have the sweet itch under control,in as much as we have a loo brush mane and for the first year ever, enough tail to go into a plait. Most of the top of the tail was chopped away 2 years ago to treat the skin properly :-(
He is rugged and treated with skin so soft and neem oil and I've just started to give a daily marmite sandwich.

While he is looking ok, there are a lot of scurfy, scabby areas on his dock, loins and mane. Any ideas on how I can improve the health of the skin? I was about to buy the Lincoln linseed with garlic and parsley but have heard that the garlic may not be the best idea as it boosts an already overactive immune system. I feed the poor thing garlic everyday last year which may explain why he immediately rubbed his mane out last November when I took the fly rug off. Oops.
I'm sure your collective hearts sank at another sweet itch thread so thanks for reading. :-)

I've always found sudocreme to be quite effective. It soothes and moisturises so the scabby dry looks disappears and so the skin stops cracking. It looks a mess, but I don't worry about things like that if they work. Also, round here at least, the dratted midgies aren't so keen on the stuff either.

Thanks, I use sudocreme for smaller rubs but this is for a larger area. His rump looks fine at a glance but he went rug free for a night as it was in the wash. The next morning all the hair was on end where he'd been "exfoliating " and I could see it wasn't as healthy as I'd thought. The dock is particularly hard to treat as his big cobby tail gets in the way. Not that I'm complaining there. The skin isn't broken, just dry and uncomfortable.

Can you get whole linseed and cook it yourself like we used to? Linseed oil will help though if you can't find micronised linseed anywhere. Will any of the UK suppliers send it to you at a reasonable price?

Hi Count Oggy I'm in Ireland too and get linseed from efeed. £40 including p&p for the first bag and £30 for any others. Well worth it, lasts ages!

Neem oil!! Its amazing stuff and has cleared my boys scabby face up so much better than I thought it would!!

It does come in big bags but that was the cheapest way I found to get it when I looked. Glad Kacey88 has a good option.

Thanks everyone. I'm off to research micronised linseed now. I think I might get some oil to tide me over and stock up when I visit the UK in august. I'll have plenty of room boot now the dog can't travel anymore. ( I'm not getting a rabies jab just to please the burocrats, but that's another thread! :@)
