This anoys me so much. Will people ever learn???? DONT leave babies or small children alone with any dog.

Poor things are being held at vets, no doubt they'l probably be put down all because of someone's s ignorance

One wonders if the grandmother was up to caring for him etc. sounds like something somewhere shouldn't have happened

The dogs have been put to sleep.

You wouldn't leave your baby alone with an open fire. You wouldn't leave your baby alone with a pile of knives.

Do not leave your baby alone with a predatory animal.

Simple really.

I was having this conversation just a few nights ago with a friend of mine. I adore my dogs, and trust them greatly, but I'd never leave them with my friends baby; it's just not fair on either

I agree and never left my children alone with our dogs.
You will always get idiots however, a yound couple who moved into one of our cottages refused the offer of a nursery fireguard round their newly installed woodburner, despite us advising they should have one.
Their little boy is 16 months old and their answer was he "Knows" thing burn..
And when he falls over on the hot metal surface I'm sure he will discover things "burn"...

I'd like to trip them up so they land on the fire and see how they feel, but you can't tell some arrogant people, they think they know best.
It's a situation just waiting to happen and I can't prevent it can I?
 
Totally agree. Our border collie bitch was so, so protective over our babies. She would stay under the pram in the garden to keep a look out for monsters if I asked her to.
Did I trust her with my life? Yes I did.
Did I trust her to be alone with my babies or toddlers? NO way.

No matter how much a dog is loved, no matter how well behaved, you cannot account for the actions of animals nor babies.

You leave two dumb animals together and are then suprised that it comes to this. It makes me bloody angry, another preventable death it seems.
 
Yep, and it takes a tragedy like this for some people to work that out. Though thats not going to undo the fact that 3 lifes have been lost because of their actions.

tbh i think it depends on how well the dog knows the child. not that i am suggesting that the dogs should have been left alone. but some dogs are fine with children if they know them and are ok to be left alone with them

I have to disagree with you. My dogs adored my children when they were babies/toddlers, and as long as I was in the room I would trust them not to harm them, even if the children did pull and prod them (which little ones do until they know better). But I would NEVER have left them together under any circumstances, even to pop to the loo. With a young baby dogs can react in a very strange way to the baby crying, I have seen bitches who have had a litter, go up to a crying baby and push the baby with their nose quite roughly. Unsupervised this sort of reaction could soon lead to something horrendous. It is far better to make sure they are never alone together.
 
dogs should never be left alone with a baby - full stop.

the reason why these things happen is that a babies movements and cries are similar to that of an injured and dying animal and will automatically trigger the hard-wired instinct to kill in any dog.

i just cant believe that yet another poor soul (the baby) has been killed because of pure ignorance.
 
Why is it always in the night when these things happen?

This must mean either the dogs were upstairs where the baby was sleeping or the baby was left alone downstairs with the dogs.

Guessing the baby was not put to bed properly in a cot and upstairs away from the dogs.

Another case of the unintelligent with fighting breed dogs learning the hard way (ref to staffy not JR!)
 
why do people not have their dogs secure away from babies and young children and not leave them unattented.if you go out the room take the child with you!would have thought its commone sense, its been in the news/papers often enough for people with none!
 
Did I read something that said the grandmother had left the child in a (Moses?) basket on the floor, downstairs??
If that is the case then.............what can I say!

I have to agree that baby jaden should never have been put in that vulnerable position but his parents and grandmother will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. I just feel that holier than thou attitudes do not help. I guess it is hard for me to read this seeing as jaden was my distant cousin. Rip jaden x
 
Poor little mite. It doesn't bear thinking about what he went through.

I've left my babies (when they were babies) with my dog before. I never intentionally left them, but you know what it's like when the phone rings, or the doorbell goes. Baby is asleep, dog is asleep and you just nip to answer it without thinking. For many of us, it's hard to believe that our lovable pets are capable of such aggression. It's not negligence, it's naivety and I was clearly guilty of it too.

Those who say they have NEVER left a child for even a split second are clearly perfect parents and good for them, but I bet there are many of us on here who should hold their hands up, if being totally honest, and say they left their child to answer the door to the postman, answer the phone, nipped to put washing in the tumbler blah blah.

That grandmother will have to endure the agony of living with what she witnessed that day for the rest of her life, as will Jaden's bereft parents.

It's heartbreaking. Yes, preventable, but then so many accidents could be prevented....that's what makes them all the more tragic.

RIP little Jaden.
 
It's another case of incompetence really. The baby was only 3mths old so chances are the dogs would not have had a lot of time to have been used to it.

It is a shame dogs (and of course this defenceless babies) lose their lives because the 'responsible adult' has not had any thought.

JRs are ready to kill anything in my opinion (probably have a stronger drive that a staffie)and I imagine the pair of them just did what their instinct led them to do. Doesn't bear thinking about and shockingly people don't even seem to learn from hearing these stories. They seem to occur far too regularly now. Simple message - do not leave babies unattended with ANY dog.

Hmm, is a shame the despicable parents (i use that term loosely) who intentionally beat and kill their own babies can't be PTS though.

Well the story goes:

- the parents went out on the town and left baby with granny
- granny left the baby on the floor in a basket with the dogs
- dogs attacked after midnight, so assume granny had gone to bed leaving baby on the floor?
 
PR there is no helping the baby now. Someone (of higher intelligence than the dogs (we presume!)) should have helped that innocent child and not left them alone together.

I am no perfect parent but I dont think it takes one to work out that animals and babies shouldn't be left to their own devices...

If stern, harsh words are what it takes to stop this happenning one more time, I feel its worth it.
 
K I don't disagree - at all. I am still trying to find out the real story from my family. I am not close to that side of the family but this has affected my auntie and uncle badly and there's just nothing I can do to console them as it was just something that should NEVER happen.

Which is what makes this worse - Jaden spent the first few months of his life in hospital so once home the parents probably wanted a well deserved night out together after spending every night in a hospital. Just makes the whole thing more tragic.

I don't actually know the grandmother.....
 
I can honestly say that I've never left my little boy in the same room as our dogs and it horrifies me that others do - What I find terribly sad is that the majority of these deaths are whilst the babies are in someone else's care

It makes you think twice about leaving your babies (not that I do).

Poor little innocent child - the thought of what he went through mades me go cold - RIP little babe
