Why?

I watched an episode of My Super Sweet 16 (on MTV) it's where these super spoilt American teens have a 16th birthday party (cost about $500,000!!!!), this one girl got one of these horses.........................it cost $200,000

suppose different cultures, different view points as seen by the comments on the video.

i personally think it looks arwful and cant imagen what damage it could cause.

it's DISGUSTING, isn't it?

and you know they sit on the weakest part of the horse's back? immagine the damage that does to a 2 year old!

i can list off loads of cruel and abusive practices carried out in the TWH and Saddlebred 'industry'... and they're all done because of vanity and/or laziness!

i think these gaited horses were bred to carry the plantation owner around his estate, many miles all day and be very comfortable.
but
have been reading on here today about how this is being exagerated by means of platform shoes, chaines and unpleasant chemicals that burn, called `soreing`.i think it is horrible

Sad...........speaking to an american friend, she told me, due to the platform shoe, these poor horses can't even reach the ground to graze, so all their food/water has to be provided at a raised level

It makes me wince and cringe, they are just so tiny and weak..... I have to admit the riders are pretty good to get what they do out of such babies. But so BIG for them.

i think that when moving 'naturally' these horses are amazing - BUT like this its horrible.

They are 2yr olds, they should be playing and growing, exagerated movement is un-natural and quite probably bad for joints/backs/limbs

Garrrrr - in a country where 'horse' slaughterhouses are banned but this is seen as desirable??

- soreing (apparently not done any more, but horses aren't inspected for it in shows, so hard to say)

- nicking and tail harnesses. nicking is where they cut the muscles above the dock and set the tail so that when the cut heals the tail is carried unnaturally high. this procedure was banned in the uk like... 100 years ago. also tail harnesses (sort of like cruppers) are worn all the time to make sure the tail stays high.

- head sets. often 'big lick' horses are lunged in specially adjusted side reins to keep their head in that high set position. rollkur springs to mind
frown.gif

- the hooves are kept unnaturally long (esp in the heels), so the inner structure of the hoof is pointing downwards, so the horse is sort of on tippi toes

- heavy shoes and chains

- great fat men sitting on the weakest part of the horses back

- broken in and forced into work like this very young (i know a lot of disciplines do this, but it doesn't make it right)

also silly things, like 1m long tail extensions... and that creepy 'camped out' pose they have...

and they're perfectly nice horses, i don't see why they have to do all these wierd things to them and not just show them naturally...

It makes me feel sick to watch them. There's something so odd about the way they walk - it's quite grotesque..

I think they are bred to have the exaggerated movement anyway but think some breeders do vile things to make the movements even more enhanced.

Those blokes look like flashers in their weird macs and hats. They are quite revolting. Sitting too far back on horse's back and with that sort of gear in horse's mouth, your great grandma could control poor creature

Exactly. Has made me feel really sad.

To be fair though, have any of you actually been to one of these yards. I went to tennesse a few years ago. We just walked into one place without an appointment (it said visitors welcome) on the gates. The horses were all extremely well looked after, with air conditioned stables. They are bred this way and its no different to us racing two year olds. They do have shoes on to exaggerate the movement, but none of the horses I saw looked in distress. They all seemed very happy and healthy, and the staff at the barn were so pleased to have visitors they got all their best horses out to show us. I dont think it is cruel.
