As requested a little update on Ted, the very sad 5yo.

Previous thread is here http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?656983-Latest-update-on-horse-%93In-Pain%94

Following a visit to specialist vet clinic he was diagnosed with severe hind gut acidosis, although further tests were required to confirm exactly what was going on. Swabs and poo samples were taken but in the meantime he was put on Equishure. Within a few days he started to show signs of improvement. Very subtle, but a little more ‘with it’. Amongst other things, he had started to look vacant, like he was looking at things that weren’t there? But after a few days of Equishure he seemed a bit more interested in life. As the days went on he stopped head shaking, and started to come out of his stable in a controlled fashion rather than stagger out, unable to bend.

He has been on the Equishure for a month now and is looking heaps better. He has started to pick up weight wise, and is generally more interested in people / life. At last, we seem to be making progress!

Vets report of poo analysis has come back and from what I can gather (apologies this is third hand!), he has abnormally low levels of good bacteria in his hind gut(lowest vet has seen), so will shortly be starting treatment. Exactly what the treatment is I’m not sure, but he will have a month of this before being re-assessed, and then some good bacteria can be introduced. If anyone wants details of exact treatment pm me and I’ll find out.

So at last some positive news : )

Oh that's fab! I know what you mean re vacant - my boy was like this before we got to the bottom of his ulcers. Sad & disinterested.

It's great when they start to come out of their shell.

Hi all, little update on this chap. As stated above, he was put on equishure initially and the improvements were seen within a few days to his behaviour, and he started to pick up a little weight wise too.

His treatment plan was due to start a month ago, however he managed to get himself kicked in the face, possibly fracturing a bone (now has a nice dent, thats the showing career out the window!) so was on bute for 3 weeks. Made a right mess, he had a huge nosebleed too, poor chap. So due to the bute his treatment had to be delayed as didn't want anything conflicting. However, bute finished and he started his treatment plan a week ago. He has 8 x weeks of this strict programme to complete with various supplements in 3 x small feeds a day. He has to have his water for feed filtered too...our feed room is resembling a science lab right now!

He is looking a lot better, but still not holding condition like his field mates. He is off to vets at the end of June for another examination so will update then. : )
