Just back from the vets. Its good news overall. There isn no damage to any tendons/ligaments/bones, just a very nasy hole over her hock, where infection is going to be the main worry. She is so much sounder today, so really pleased about that. The skin around the two tarmac burns is beginning to die and her front legs are very puffy from the concussion but if we can keep it free from infection I think she will be ok.'

The only bad part is the cost, so far we are over £600 and she has to go back every 2 days to have it flushed and redressed, so it is going to get very expensive. She isnt insured and wont be sellable for a long time yet, so I am thinking I will have to sell Jerry inorder to pay her vets bills

I dont have any other way of raising enough cash. Not sure how much he is worth now, but hopefuly it will be enough. I am totally heartbroken about this, and keep trying to think of another way but doesnt look good.

Thanks again for all the support, the main thing is that she will hopefully make a full recovery

I am so glad it's (overall) good news! Although I am really sorry to hear about the vets bills and having to sell your other horse! Would the vet not allow you to pay in installments? Sometimes they can be quite helpful in this way and it is possible to spread the costs.

BTW Camrosa is very good for healing skin (once your vet is happy that the risk of infection is past).

Best of luck with her!

Glad its looking better for her.

Would the vet not allow you to do the flushing and dressing the wounds to help keep the costs down a bit?

Also as booboos says try asking if you can pay in installments

My friends mare got caught up really badly in wire last year, it went through a hind tendon. The only reason she wasn't shot is that she's a lovely mare who had already produced one lovely foal. My friend kept her at home and did all of the nursing herself and kept it clean and managed to keep infection out. She did it all because of vets fees and she wasn't insured. The mare has had a lovely filly this year and is back at stud now!. So it can be done at home to keep costs down.

So glad the overall news is good, but not so good if you have to sell Jerry. In the past my vet has let me pay for expensive treatments over several months, so would definite suggest you ask if this is an option.

Some years ago my mare spooked sideways and ran into a protruding branch out on a ride, which had only recently been pruned back, which had left a sharp edge like a knife. My girl, being the kind of girl she was, had to run into it! She was left with a flap of skin a good eight inches square hanging down her shoulder. She had something like 40 stitches and was on box rest for some weeks, and then weeks of being led out on a lunge line to graze. She was uninsured.
The vet visited daily for the first few days but after that I did most of the injections and dressing changes. I would have to check my vet's invoices but I think I paid in instalments. Hope she makes a good recovery - horrendous incident, and do hope you don't have to sell Jerry. Good luck.

So glad to hear that there is no structural damage to your mare. Echo what others have said about paying in instalments, or maybe see about a bank loan? Don't know if this is an option for you.

can you set up a direct debit - so paying £50 a month or something like that....I know when I was a vet nurse this is how alot of people paid because one big sum was too much at one time...?
Also maybe loaning Jerry might be an idea just while you count your costs - or get a sharer to help out...that would save some money...?
How about a loan...? Would that help...?
