What is the scientific colour of my horse? His Endurance record has him as "skewbald" and his passport has him as "white with a brown face".

When clipped there is a clear "roaning" effect on his ears

Are the patches 20 by 20 cm? I think, but could be mistaken, that anything under this would be considered as markings rather than skewbald. This is the case for brown ect horses with patches of white anyhow. :)

Edited because I thought some more!

I would guess either a near maximum chestnut sabino (no black on the ears to indicate bay) or a chestnut tovero (in this case would be tobiano + sabino).

The roaning does make me think sabino but because of the chestnut cheeks I think possibly tobiano too.

That would be a "medicine hat" paint in America. Or skewbald, since you're here (or rather "there" since I'm in Ireland).

Just been reading that re medicine hat and its really interesting. I must say that I've not seen another like him where the only colouring is on the face.

Just a pain to keep clean as he is a mud monster!

I should add his tail has a very small amount of both brown and black in it

My chestnut mare (see sig below, she's on the left) has a very dark liver and black centre to her tail and she's definately chestnut.

Medicine hat describes the placement of the base colour patch but isn't a scientific/genetic description.

I would say that she is definately chestnut (base colour) with at least one pinto gene as I described in my post earlier. :)
