as always opinions will vary and suggestions may not suit my mare or my pocket!

rising four heavyweight mare, just broken to ride and always struggles to keep weight on. now starting to gain slight muscle on topline. thinking i may need to change her feed now. currently on chaff, top spec balancer, weight gain (an own brand) and soya oil. on ad lib haylage, living out 24/7 with shelter and heavyweight rug.

any suggestions to help keep weight on and gain topline please or stick to what she is on as weight reasonable.

Personally I would keep her on what she's already on if looking ok. Unmolassed sugar beet is also a fab feed, you can feed a good quantity of it, it is cheap and it is good for them. My two (TB and a TBxID) pretty much live on chaff, sugarbeet, some simple system Lucerne nuts, and hay/haylage and they look pretty good despite being pretty poor doers.
Another thing is possibly putting another rug on if she may be getting cold?

I would personally have her on Alfa a oil, Topspec plus micronised linseed. That should do the trick but if not then top up with unmolassed beet which is nice and cheap.

You don't mention how much she is getting, in the first instance I would up your current feed, either add in an extra feed, or increase quantity

I've always had horses that struggle to keep weight on but are prone to going mad if I feed them anything 'heating' and have tried various combos. The best combination I have found by far is a mix of Alfa A Oil, Blue Chip Original, Allen & Page's Calm & Condition and added Oil.
