I did post similar a while ago but agian circumstances have changed. I now have 2 horses (including Ziggy) at home and the 3 ponies. Then I kept one place in a rented field locally and now a friends horse is the second in it instead of me having to pay for both places which i was struggling with.
So my retired TB stayed there and is living with another retired TB. Both were living a "nice last summer" , however mine is recently doing really well, he has a relativley new splint and I am wondering if it was simply that and rock hard ground that was bothering him. ( he has soundness issues hence retiring but had been consistantly mildly lame even in the field recently)
Ziggy came home as there was too much grass for him at the above field and I tried bringing him back into work. Sadly the head shaking really is too much, coupled with his slightly crazy ridden personality and complete hysteria of flies its really no fun for either of us. I *think I've decided to call it a day with him work wise.
He also herds the others around at getting in time which I hate. He doesnt do it if they are all staying out but as soon as he sees me he starts. He also yells a lot! I weirdly find this really stressful. I can be sat inside trying to work and hear him screaming his head off for no reason. He diddnt do this at the other place- Or maybe I just couldnt hear him...
Anyhow, there is now no grass at said field, and TB is being eaten by flies even covered 24/7 He is always the same, gets huge lumps which then go manky. So I'm wondering about swappint them over again.
TB back here where I can be treating and creaming his sores easier and where he can come in during the day so be less likely to be attacked by flies anyway, he is also quieter and easier to have around, and Ziggy back to the field, this would work for now at least, until the other horse is pts. Not sure what happens then
Downsides of said plan:
TB is an absolute pig to muck out, thats a me problem though I guess, he loves to be in and spends all day lying down.
Zig also hates flies, but isnt reactive to them, he can be rugged. Is he going to be miserable, although he seemed fairly happy and chill when he was there previously.
I don't know if TB is actually going to stay field sound or if, indeed I should just pts, I was at peace with that plan until he came so much sounder.
The companion is needed for anothet TB, rather than the ponies. So weight wise (if we do ever get grass again) another TB would be best suited.
Both will need front shoes on here, there is not saving or extra expense who ever go's where.
If we actually had grass at home they could just both be back here. I just wish I knew which one is viably the best long term companion.
