Undecided as to what to do.
Do I go or do I stay.
Current yard.
Pros
Close to home.
Large stable.
Own paddock although fenced by me.
I have some good friends there.
Horse is settled.
Cons.
No maintenance done.
Place is a mess.
Takes diy to a whole new level.
Hacking not great but okay, all roads

Other yard.
Pros
Jobs get done by yo.
Own paddock.
Decent hacking although have to go down a main road.
Better facilities and school.
Know a few people there.
Cons

Further away from home so more fuel.
Would have to give up lessons to cover extra costs.
Can decide, been umming and aahing for a while.
Wwyd .

I think I would move. I was at a yard earlier this year where no maintenance got done, everywhere was a mess, no poo picking got done or ragworting. Plus the hacking was rubbish. I got so fed up of it I moved (slash was pushed). I wouldn't have thought the distance on a dual carriage way would make too much difference timewise? Sounds like a tricky decision.

It is.
I need some unbiased opinions

I moved last year to 10 minutes from home instead of 5 minutes from home. I couldn't believe the difference it made mentally, and that was on one trip a day and only then if I wanted to go and see him, and in an electric car costing pennies per journey.

I know I'm not making this any easier, sorry!

Well, for me I would move. Hacking is what is most important to me. Plus I'm quite reclusive.

For you, it depends how much you're going to miss your lessons? And your friends?

It is when it's twice a day everyday no matter what
Can you cycle?

I moved from one 5 mins from home to 8mins to get better & longer turnout. I don't regret it, though the yard I left had really nice hacking across the road. In winter the extra turnout is invaluable.

I'd stay where you are. Imo it's rather the devil you know. You know all the cons of where you are but won't know for the new place until you get there.

If the other place was absolutely perfect then I'd move but otherwise stay.

What is the worst bit about where you are and can you do anything about it?

For a 4 mile total trip it's a no brainer for me I'd be moving.

This, with bells on for me.

I'd always choose better hacking.

Horse has never been closer than he is now and that's still 3-4ish miles away. He's now on complete DIY rather than assisted DIY when I moved (the assistance stopped) & it's not a lot of journey-ing in the scheme of things I find.

If it's dual carriageway the roads are likely to be gritted etc in winter so will make it much easier than say 4 miles of rural road.

As someone who had a horse on full DIY 12 miles away, 4 miles sounds like bliss.
I would love, as long as you don't anticipate the main road to good hacking being an issue..
Do you get on with the people you know at the new yard?

Thanks for all the replies. Staying put for now. Went to have a proper look at the yard, clocked it on car today not google maps. It would be and extra 140 miles a week. Too much and it would be a sideways move rather than an upwards one. Spoke to one of the liveries who said not many people on the yard ride, wouldn't like to do the main road on my own.
