Anti Cast strips or banks?

As the title really, up to now have used shavings on rubber mats with good banks to stop horses getting cast.

However, considering changing to wood pellet bedding and can't see these working in banks so what do folks do?

Has anyone who has got the anticast strips that you put on the wall tell me what they think of them and/or recommend me a make?

B and Q timber strips 4 x 2". screwed into the wall, 2 lines of timber on each wall.

I took time before putting them up, trying to picture the horse down and where the legs would be if he was thrashing. I put the lowest bar in at about 2 ft and the next one 10 inches higher.

The 2 boxes I have them in are shavings on an earth floor and the strips have been used judging by the marks on them.
 
All the horses I have seen cast had deep banking! A friend's horse used to get cast regularly, until she put up the strips. Never had a problem since.
 
I have the anti-cast strips from Robinsons but I don't think they have been used.

The way I stopped my horse getting cast was to put down rubber matting and then give a small bed, just big enough for her to lie down on, so that she has to lie against the bank. Does that make sense?

Most horses seem to get cast when given a huge bed in which they lie in the middle or away from the edge, roll all the way over and get stuck. Given a smaller bed, mine lies against the bank and if she does roll she does one side at a time. Need rubber matting for safety though, as bed is small.

Very valid point, I brought a yearling in last week to see the vet. Popped her into 12x12 box which she is used to. It had a new deep bed of nice straw. She launched herself into the straw head first, flipped over onto her back and got wedged in the corner, within 60 seconds of being in there.

Thankfully, god bless the irish draught temperament, she allowed me to get ropes on and turn her.

Horses are not nesting animals, but I always have huge deep beds down - it's a human reasoning being put into the horse. Rubber mats do the job with a half bed of shavings and if I had put her in one of those boxes she would not have nosedived to the floor or got cast.
 
Hi, I use wood pellts with no banks but do have rubber matting up the sides of the walls about 1 1/2 feet high. Touch wood this works and neither of my boys have gotten cast.

My two big lads haven't got cast so far but always had shaving banks one does so like to roll in the stable but he does tend to do a side at a time get up then roll other side so was wanting to make certain before we swapped.
