Hi, I have a tb who got a really bad abcess (started travelling up!) he was in so much pain but eventually the farrier opened it. He wanted use to put him on penicillin for 5 days as well as the poulticing ect. I'm out of neomycin and was wondering if engemycin will do the same job???

The only time I've had antibiotics prescribed for a hoof abscess, was when the leg swelled. Generally giving antibiotics prolongs the abscess rather than fixing it, so is not advised.

Your farrier is not qualified nor legally allowed to prescribe antibiotics. If you think the horse may need them consult a vet. They can cause huge problems with foot abscesses and are generally contraindicated if the abscess is open and draining.

Antibiotics and a hoof abcesses don't really go hand in hand. I would be tubbing with epsom salts.

^^^^ this :)

Epsom salts will help draw out any gunk that is left in the hole.

If you can get any (not sure if it's available in the UK) Magnoplasm is amazing stuff. Chuck some in the hole, cover with a pad, wrap and allow it to do it's thing. Can be used on infections, abscesses, boils, drawing foreign bodies out of skin, etc. Works on people and animals. http://www.magnoplasm.com.au/

A farrier prescribing medication???
I would contact your vet, foot infection can go deadly nasty if the pedal bone gets infected. I would contact your vet asap. If you have already you have done the right thing, a farrier should not take the law onto himself and prescribe drugs of any sort.
