So i took my dog to the vet and he was given a course of antibo my problem is he is a clever little monster and is spitting it out or eating around it.
any tips would be great thank you.

P.S leaking a good bit now when will i get to see if it is a bladder infection??
 
Open dogs mouth and pop the tablet as far back as possible, hold dogs mouth closed and tilt head upwards and gently stroke the neck to encourage him to swallow.
 
I do what Gina B said, but I give Otto a tiny bit of something to eat before and after (usually a tiny bit of cheese) not because he naughty just to get him in the habit of associated Tablets with tasty treats

Plus if he did decide to start spitting them out, it would confuse him a bit!
 
Henry is a git for holding tablets in his mouth and actually swallowing when you stroke his throat, then looking shifty and spitting it out again once you let go

Giving him his tablets was a bit of a battle of wills, although he also had some that were nice tasting and ate them like sweeties!

I found it helpful to shove them as far down his throat as possible before commencing the throat stroking - fortunately he is pretty bombproof so handles all this well. I guess a more sensitive type might be a bit traumatised...

My first doggy ended up on meds for about 8yrs and she had it in a bit of dairylea twice a day without fail! The new 2 arent quite so good though. So with them we have tried in cheese/ham, in their dinner, dropping in mouth holding shut and stroking throat/putting a couple of drops of water in their mouth using a syringe so they actually swallow and finally getting a little pill popper thing from the vets that they usually use for cats but very handy for getting the table right at the back of their mouth.
 
My old GSD would hold onto it with me holding her head upright for up to ten mins and then spit it out again.
Hide it in a bit of cheese you have warmed and rolled with your hands, or a bread and butter sandwich or slip it inside a small piece of meat.
 
i tried the meat yesterday first a bit of sausage them some chicken and even cheese. its a big pill so would not feel comfortable about putting in mouth and waiting.
i ended up using his dinner so a little bit this morning and then again a little tonight fingers crossed it keep working but i have to make sure he is not watching me little monster !!!
 
B is on massive pills at the mo, I actually break them into four, that might work better?
He is a bit simple and wolfs them up along with the rest

I also mix natural yoghurt in there to help ease any stress the medication is causing in his gut, might you try that, would it disguise it enough?
 
Mine is on them for a recurrent UTI and he also has a mass in his bladder.
I saw a difference in a day or two.
I wish I didn't have to blast him with so such medication so young but I changed vets and this guy is really good so I'm going to have to trust him.
Got another scan tomorrow to see if the mass has gone down - no cancer cells, thank God!
 
The pill popper thing from the vets, as kwinstanley called it, is actually quite good. Works on cats and dogs (though I'm beginning to suspect that the old moggy has learned to breath out just as I try to empty the pill popper = me sprayed with water and a pill, young cat is an angel and doesn't need a pill popper when it's time to deworm).



A version of GinaB's advice.

Put an extra, very special, tasty treat besides you, open his mouth and put the pill (or half of the pill) as far back as possible, hold the mouth tightly shut with one hand and tilt his head a little back, take the extra, very special, tasty treat and hold in front of the nose. If you're careful so you don't allow him to open his mouth and spit the pill out through the corner of the mouth on the opposite side from you, he will quickly have so much saliva that he will have no option but to swallow the pill (if not, the treat was not enough special and tasty) and as soon as he has swallowed the pill, he gets the treat.

Ps. Have you tried tiny bits of blood pudding? Or if desperate, roast beef, tenderloin or anything similar that he maybe has never/almost never eaten before. Remember you don't need to give him huge bits, considering that things like tenderloin is expensive (it is over here), if tasty and special enough, you only need a tiny bit per pill.
 
Ibot, they did an ultrasound test and found the mass, bloods and urine tests identified chronic, recurrent urinary tract infections. He is not diabetic and the mass is not cancerous, according to the tests.

Without being too graphic, part of his sheath had to be removed when he was 4wks, so he is more vulnerable to infection in that region.
He has recently been neutered and we are hoping that is two less things to worry about.....

Thanks for your wishes, he is the most high maintenance dog I have ever owned but he is a superstar and has coped really well with all the trips to the vets and invasive procedures.

animals tend to be very stronge when they need to be not like me im a big woss i never fall off a horse i fall and brake a leg or something lol
 
eddie was 12 in june and he is a jrt cross norfolk terrier and he is tan and very cute big eyes and i have to say i am blessed with him he is a bit grumpy now but he has never attacked anyone and he comes out hacking with me and keeps up truly amazing.
