I'm very rarely ill but was over Christmas but my dr explained I couldn't have antibiotics as people are developing too much resistance and they try to only prescribe 4 lots in a lifetime! I'm quite sure as a kid I've out done my quota but it made me wonder is the same not going to be or already a problem in horses who get antibiotics at the drop of a hat. At work we can just phone in and collect antibiotics.

Yes. Eventually all bugs will be resistant to all antibiotics. Hopefully the clever molecular people will come up with some new medicines by then. It's exactly the same thing that is happening with worms and wormers.

Hi i think you may need to find a new Doctor :( if you need antibiotics you should have them, there are so many different sorts available and an untreated infection can be horrendous .
I am not an expert but have had the need of antibiotics when only antibiotics will do :D

I try and take (and give my horse) antibiotics as rarely as I can. If your popping antibiotics like candy then chances are, your going to become resistant to antibiotics and when your ill in the future, your going to have a harder time getting better. I've only taken a course of antibiotics once, and I rarely get ill anymore. Maybe I've got a good immune system or I've always been the sort of 'toughen up and deal with it' sort of person  But I'm not a doctor, if your ill you need to get better, maybe get a second opinion :)

Some Dr's hand them out like smarties, but when genuinely needed, they should be given and taken. I am sure the same non effectiveness will occur in horses if they are given them too often - like wormers - a resistance can be built. I am on my fourth course of antibiotics in three months, I have rarely taken any before.

Ha, yes it was my Dr second chance and they failed. 2 years ago I was ill and they did the same- I was admitted via ambulance 3 days later so this time yes I switched surgery and I am now far far better.
I don't give my horses antibiotics willy nilly but one had two courses last year with an infection and It just made me think!
