Antihistamine - how much?

My pony has been diagnosed with allergies.

He had a high breathing rate and was coughing, was given some Dilaterol so that combined with the weather turning to rain fixed it.

The sun has come back out and the pollen count has risen, now his breathing is back up at about 25 breaths per minute. Dilaterol isn’t touching it but it does drop down when the pollen does so I want to try antihistamines.

My question is, how do I know how many to give? And what brand?
He has had laminitis previously so don’t know if that affects it. Also are they safe to give at the same time as Dilaterol?

Thanks :)

Speak to your vet. They might suggest a loading dose to be followed by a maintenance dosage.
Amounts of the likes of Piriton vary widely when its given to equines.
For example, my hacking friend gives her 16hh gelding 4 a day, I used to give a 32" mini 10 twice daily, (as instructed by clued up vet) which is a huge difference in prescription! Both animals clinically assessed 1st.
So, ask your vet.

To give you an idea my horse is 16.1 645 in weight she’s on 16 tablets a day 8 morning 8 evening I use cetirizine vet said she could have up to 30 a day but that made her drozie so played with it until I found what worked. Friend of mine has a 14.2 he’s on 10 a day every horse is different.

To add... my vets weren’t really that fused whether I tried antihistamine said it was up to me...as they aren’t life threatening. But the ones they offered were 10 times more expensive and the same ingredients.

You must check with vet..it depends on weight of pony and strength of tablets. For instance my mare had three days of 30 tabs reducing to 18 ....550kg mare...and only for the period of time that the irritant was in the environment.

See your veterinarian. This is the best. If you yourself do not know what drug is needed, then it is better to ask a specialist. The dosage is also better to ask your veterinarian.

I would phone your vet and just ask them. My 14.2 is around 450kg and he gets 12 piriton in each feed when required but only if he has a reaction to something, not long term. Best to just telephone them I'm sure if they are a decent vet they will advise whether or not they need to see horse first.

Speak to your vet, they know your horse and it’s history. What works for one won’t suit others.

You need to understand what you are giving to your horse also, some antihistamines will have a sedating effect and I certainly wouldn’t want to be working with/riding a horse who is on antihistamines who is adversely affected by different ones. Your vet is the best one to ask.

Obviously ask your vet first but a friend of mine tried this and I think the nigella in it helped out as it is a natural antihistamine https://www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/audevard-balsamic-control-horse-respiratory-aid-dry-dusty

When I asked our vet about trying antihistamines they said they weren't much use in horses as the drugs aren't absorbed efficiently - this was a respiratory specialist at a major referral hospital so I'm assuming they knew their stuff!
