Antihistamines for horses?

I've heard of lots of people giving Piriton to horses and thought I may try it on one of mine who has allergies.
He's 15hh what sort of dose would I try and does it have to be piriton or will any allergy pill do?
 
There is an online pharmacy that does really good deals but there are others better than Piriton which can make them drowsy - Ceterezine seems to be the most popular. There is lots of discussion on the subject on the Sweetitch Support group on Facebook
 
No, you don't need a prescription, they are over the counter medications. I can't find my link but I bought in bulk very cheaply. I'm sure someone on there mentions it
 
He has copd. He needs very very careful management through winter. He's out now, has been about 3 weeks but is coughing. Not badly but he's usually ok living out.
I know I should probably get the vet but tbh I've such a massive bill that I'm struggling to pay I'm hesitant to add to it right now. He's fine apart from this cough which isn't all the time so I figured I could give this a try and rule it out before going down the vet route just yet. It's not getting worse and obviously if it does I will call them out.
 
Will they not prescribe Ventipulmin for him (sorry, I'm just wary of non equine medications for conditions where there is a tried and tested alternative)?
 
The previous 2 years my horse has developed really bad coughs in the summer and has only been able to do limited work. His breathing in the winter is pretty much fine. Looking at my diaries I realised it seemed to start at about this time of year in each case. This summer I spoke to the vet and asked about trying an antihistamine because i noticed he had been coming in and snorting and itching his nose on his leg so wondered if it was a pollen allergy. The vet said to try it but that antihistamines weren't as effective as in humans. He said for my 16hh approx 500kg horse to give 10 piriton in the morning and 10 at night and that I should be able to tell if it was working within 10 days. I started piriton which doesn't make my horse drowsy but wish I had tried cetrizine as it seems easier to get in shops! (although i just bought 500 piriton online for about £10.). Not sure what the dose is for cetirizine.

So far it does seem to be helping and he isn't snorting any more and he is only very rarely coughing. I would say worth a try but if it doesn't help fairly quickly see the vet.
 
Try hyperdrug for piriton. I had mine on 10 am and pm after a reaction - but she was very drowsy on them. My other horse had a higher dose and wasn't sleepy at all
