My hubby and i are planning to emigrate early next year. Does anyone have any advice on the best horsey areas. We are thinking Queensland, due to my hubby's work. I would be looking for a job part or full time, my background is eventing/problems/ex racehorses, does anyone know the best way to get a foot in the door? Any advice would be great, thanks x
 
There have been a few jobs advertised recently on yard and groom in Australia recently if thats any help? Also I am sure there is a poster or 2 on this forum who post quite often... Damn memory fails me as to who they are atm! (not a lot of help I know!)
 
There are thousands of Thoroughbreds in Australia because we have the second biggest Thoroughbred population in the world. There will be work in this field but not a lot of money unless you take them eventing and sell them as successful horses. You can PM me and I will try and help with further information about Australia.

I'm trying to think what sort of work your husband could do for Queensland to be his best option!! (Cane cutting??) I've done it the opposite way - from Australia to the UK. I took my Pommy husband to Oz for our honeymoon (in a HOT January) - and we didn't get as far north as Queensland - if we had, I think he'd have DIED! The heat knocked him sideways - and he had dreadful allergies to the insect bites.

The heat can be VERY oppressive when you're not used to it - I would be looking further south - Sydney, Melbourne - or even Perth (although Perth is HOT is is not nearly as oppressive as there's usually a nice sea breeze.)
 
I would go for perth too, having been over there (although we came back :) ) Its hot in Perth, but dry not humid although there does seem to be a lot of flies in WA. I think WA is the sunniest place really, never seem to have miserable weather - which you can get quite a lot of in sydney/melb ime. They haven't had great summers over there the last couple of years.

There's lots of TBs and racing in WA - well, I guess everywhere really! There's also pacing which might be an opportunity too :)
 
Melbourne has a superb horsey backdrop to it. Victoria is a smashing state and I would recommend it to anyone to live. If you want any insider info on Victoria then please PM me. Heaps to discuss. What is the nature of hubby's work?
 
I lived in Perth for years, it was great. And my first job out there was handling yearlings for the sales, and I'm sure if I'd stuck with it and not got the travel bug I would still be out there now working with horses, just think, no snow to muck out in!
 
Since '66, in my teens :D, & love it! I'm in Victoria at Ballarat which is a very similar climate to Sth. England, imo, bar the few high 30s in Dec (occasional) Jan. & Feb mostly. I've heard to much about the 'itch' & damned ticks (dogs as well) in Q/land & parts of NSW to ever want to live there with horses :o, tho' ppl do seem to manage!
We have 13 acres with 3 cows/calves, 2 9yo semi retired r/horses & presently train 1 of own our & 2 for clients, all out 24/7.
There seem to be plenty of 'agistment' centres to all various standards & the further you are from capital cities, the lower the cost but honestly, if you ask on Cyberhorse, as many before you have done, you'll get a far better idea of where, what & whys :D & for Heavens sake.........don't worry about the snakes!!!! I'm unlucky if I see one in 4 yrs!!

Agree, come to Victoria! The horse scene is fabulous, although I must admit NSW is pretty serious as far as open competition goes!

I was born here is Aus, and there is no way I could handle the heat in QLD, humidity kills me! Plus all the other nasties (QLD itch, Hendra virus, ticks....) My OH keeps teasing me about moving to QLD :p

As far as competitions go, Victoria has Pony Club, EV (Equestrian Australia- Victorian branch, affiliated with the FEI) and also HRCAV, which is Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria, which is great for those not wanting to do official EA stuff, and the disciplines include the 3 olympic ones, as well as things like showing and Le trec. There are also lots of Agricultural shows if showing is your thing!

Australia is a great place to live, although I might be a little biased! ;)
 
Ahem. I live in Cairns, Far North Queensland, which is almost as far north as you can get.

Yes we (allegedly) have rabid ticks, an itch that makes you chase your own tail around, slight gusty winds known as tropical cyclones, it gets a tad hot and sweaty for a few months of the year (most of them actually), we have bats that purposely chase horses around trying to bit them and infect them with Hendra, I have seen so many snakes that I have now given them pet names, we have no skills aside from cane cutting and tree hugging, rain is a nusience and the grass grows so fast that you can sit down with a beer after mowing the lawn and watch it double in height before your eyes.

So why on earth would anybody consider living in such a dangerous place?

If I wake up in the morning and I am bored in a couple of hours I can be at any number of beaches, Port Douglas, the Daintree, Mission Beach, out on the reef, on one of the islands. I can also go up the tablelands to any number of the attractions up there. Oh, and the real reason people put up with the hot humid conditions of summer? Because in winter there is no where else you want to be. We have more southeners up here than you can poke a stick at and the amount of tourists, national and international is pretty staggering.

I was born and raised here. I have visted family in other parts of Australia and have wanted to go back home within days, one of my brothers moved to Kalgoorlie WA and was back within a year. My other brother lives in Mackay and loves it.

I have no intentions of moving out of Queensland.
 
There is a pretty healthy horse scene most places in Australia (not to the same extreme as UK ). You are best to work out what your employment opportunities are (and if you can cope with the heat in the hotter parts).

We have a big horsey area in Hawkesbury area just out of Sydney. Victoria has a hunting scene I believe which you may not really find elsewhere (there is a Sydney Hunt Club but the hunts are 3-4 hours out of Sydney).

I am sure you will enjoy no matter where you end up.
 
Wow! Lucky you! My dream is to move out to Australia! My dad grew up in Sydney, they went over as ten pound poms! OH got offered a job out there (construction) in Brisbane a few years ago but we decided against it as the time wasn't right! Hoping one day the time will be right! Got loads of friends out there, one works with tbs and loves it! Good luck :)
 
I just moved over to Melbourne about a week ago, and am going to start looking for riding etc soon. It seems the South Eastern suburbs are fairly good (convenient, as that's where I am!) and there seems to be quite a lot of racing stuff going on.
Climate however, is bloody horrible! ;)

I lived in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne until two years ago. Should be able to help you with horse related information. Now live in the Latrobe Valley. Cheers.
 
I also live in FNQ on the Atherton Tablelands which are just west and up a mountain range from Cairns. Cairns is beautiful but it is that bit cooler up here with a bit more space.

I am from Kent and moved out here permanently 4 years ago with my Ozzie husband.

I'm happy to have a PM 'chat' with you with any questions you may have? It is daunting but I love it here (ticks,cyclones, hendra and all!!)
 
My dad actually came out to Australia from the UK in the 50's . He was from Willenhall. He rode a push bike through Europe, caught a boat from Turkey, landed in Adelaide, and bought a motor bike and rode to Mt. Isa (mining area) where he worked as a metalurgist. He then later travelled to Canada, where he lived for three years (met my mum and got married, she was a New Zealander), and they both came back to Australia to live.

Dad was in his early 20's when he left the UK. I often think how different everything must of been at that time from the rolling green pastures on the UK. Esp. Mt Isa as that is practically desert and 40 degree C temps.
 
yesh.... stay on the east side/middle... stay away from WA... then I can get all the nice horsey jobs :D :D :p

I love WA, despite what JG says, Perth is not what I'd call hot (as a pom with a particular favour for 21 degrees all year round!). I even ended up han shovelling 220tonne of grain in 40+ degree heat!! It's actually a dry hot, not a humid hot, so it doesn't feel much hotter than we get on a good summer!
Except at night, when if that sea breeze (350km inland!!!) didn't pick up, it was pretty horrid!

From perth down to albany, there is a lot of lovely horsey/cow country. It's resonably temperate, not too hot, rains a lot (you'll feel right at home :D ) and there's some lovely beaches. There are also bushfires, spiders, the odd snakes (I feel very unlucky, I saw four in a year :( ) and kamakazee kangeroos!

I discovered my "home" will always be WA. There's no where in the UK that I can just sit for hours smiling for the hell of it being an amazing place to be.

This Australian is considering New Zealand too. Would love to go to England but wouldn't be able to stay longer than six months. Because I am Australian, I don't have that problem with New Zealand. If you are not a fan of hot weather, New Zealand is well worth considering.
