Hello, I am seeing my farrier to discuss options tomorrow (my mare has arthritis of coffin joints). She really feels it on the hard, and comes back with filled legs and strong pulse.

She has got standard egg bars on at mo, but am thinking of something lighter to reduce the concussion?? My farrier mentioned something aluminium on the phone. Anyone got any suggestions/experience?

Sandy had racing shoes! Nice and light for her and she only did off road work until she got too stumbly. As she got worse she had spavin shoes on the back and eggbars on the front. Kept her sound right until the end.

Ella was diagnosed with arthritis of the coffin joint in April. She has had 2 injections into the jont, but the remedial shoeing has been the most significant part of her now being sound. She is a heavy horse (17 hh Clydesdale x). My farrier shoes her with quarter clips and lightweight wide shoes, which support the heel. After 6 months, the angle of her fetlock joint is much more upright. I am now riding her and (fingers firmly crossed) she is staying sound.

Our arthritic mare is now barefoot and moving much better for it. She never had hinds shoes on anyway, and had her front shoes taken off about a year ago. Her legs are always much warmer and she is definitely feeling pretty well...

thanks everyone. i have tried the egg bars and equipak, but i just can't afford the equipak long term. Also it didn't seem to make a huge difference to her. So, we're going to try aluminium egg bars in front - apparently the aluminium is lighter and has less concussive effect, and go barefoot behind. If she wasn't prone to bruised soles I'd be tempted to try barefoot all round.
Her feet are a really good shape, so will have to see how things go.

Can I ask what you do with your mare work wise? My Boy was diagnosed with mild arthritis of the coffin joint in May, He was only 1 10th lame the day we went to the vet and he also had 3 HA injections, He is now having NB corrective shoeing every 5 weeks, He was sound most of the summer just hacking out as normal, I even took him clear round jumping once on a rubber school just to see what would happen, he was still sound! All he's been on since is (Mobifor a joint supplement only available through the vet, by his recommendation) Only since the late summer he's not been so good, I think the problem is he's not doing the level of work he used to, so bombs about the field bucking & twisting & then makes him self lame, he's only lame for 1/2 a day most of the time, if you see him bomb about in the morning & he comes up lame by that evening he's sound again. My black smith said that un level ground would be the biggest problem from him? If I ride him & canter him out (controlled in a straight line)he comes back sound, I just don't know what to do???? He's only 13 & very forward, He used to love jumping & work, its just heart breaking (He doesn't realise that he has a problem).
