Any advise please

Hello i wonder if anyone can offer any advise (just come across site!)

My horse Red has a few issues, we do not have a passport for him so we are unsure of his back ground, but we rescued him 2 years ago, due to the previous owner neglecting him, its taken us 2 years to get his weight back up! He is a 16.3HH TB

we have just started riding him again and we have been having "issues" he keeps running/walking backwards really fast, also he's only done it once but bunny rears!

We have had 7 different saddles for him so far, to try and find a correct one, and this one has been fitted professionally, but we are still having the issues, he also constantly chomps on the bit, he is a good boy for the first 20mins, then he starts to play up. We have had his back and teeth checked and they are fine

we are not sure why or what to do with him.

i've thought about sending him away for re-training but i can not find any information on Google for anywhere is Essex, does anyone know anywhere that is reasonably priced, or does anyone have any ideas why he maybe doing this?

Others will have more sophisticated advice but I'd say that if he is good for 20min stop your schooling sessions after 19mins. That way both of you have a positive experience. Also: can you hack him out, ideally in company?

he has been hacked out not by me, but someone else, but he bolted with them on! not sure if it was because the rider tensed up, so I've not hacked him out again! also he has to lead also when hacked out in company
 
He's a big lad, quick too I expect. Best to change tactics before he really scares you.

As the above post, if he's good for a short while, school him for 10 mins, lots of praise, positive experience all round, something to build on.
 
Perhaps if you lunge him a few times he might settle. He should start to listen to your voice for commands too. Also if there is anything bothering him so to speak you should be able to see if on the lunge?

Have you considered that the reason he ended up in the situation he did was because he was dangerous to ride???

Now of course you have him in tip top condition and he's feeling great, and sometimes that simply exaccerbates the problem.

Do you know anything of his history at all??? Where did you actually buy him from, and was he raced?
 
we brought him from a yard we used to keep our other TB at, the girl before us had drug issues and he was purchased for her by her parents thinking this may help her kick the habit!! the girl used to think that 1 bale of straw and 1 bale of hay a week was enough for this horse....... hence why we steeped in and took her off him ( at price of course!)

Hence why we do not know any more of his back ground than that, he may have been raced at some stage of his life, for i can not tell for sure.

He is no way a nasty horse and he has never bitten kicked anyone, and he enjoys being groomed etc
 
He should have a microchip if he's 8 ( Ithink) or under. See if you can beg, borrow, or steal a scanner, get the number and then ring Weatherbys. They are very helpful, and will give you his racing name and last trainer. He should have a Weatherbys passport anyway.
