I am also a newbie.. starting with coldwater fish so goldfish and comets. I am now very "up" with water balance, fish in tank, positioning etc so can help with the basics.
Though my silver goldfish is now half as big again as the original one..! Might need to buy some more so he doesn't feel he can keep growing..

Goldfish are not really suitable for tanks as despite popular belief they CAN and do outgrow them!! Goldies can grow to 12 inches or more and are far better suited to ponds. There are several "tropical" species which do very well in coldwater tanks, including danios, white cloud mountain minnows, odessa barbs, which are stunning!! and golden barbs.

Thats what I am finding.. currently eyeing the pond of my lovely dog walker if the silver one gets any bigger. I went through the entire tank research, water balance with the help of my brother (who has a lot of fish) and numerous trips to the local fish shop as well. I was told that goldfish will grow according to how much food/space is available. Even bypassed my original choice of tank (I wanted a very large "bowl", but was advised that that is not good for GF).
Oh well, might wait till Spring before Mr large Silver moves outside but have made a note of your suggestions. Can I also say, that despite going on the internet AND asking my fish shop, no one suggested a cold water tropical species (though on reflection that might have been that this is my first time round and they were trying to keep it simple!)

Our goldfish also outgrew their tank, so I built them a small pond.5 years later they were too big for that so I built them an even larger (1250 litres pond).They seem happy enough to breed now.We had a Heron take one so I have had to add extra netting round the pond, all seems sorted.
The pond also helps attract damselflies, frogs, newts, pond skaters and the likes so helps the environment too. My only gripe now is the dreaded blanket weed which I have successfully treated the pond for in previous years but it seems to have a strangle hold this year.
