I am trying to see if there are any horsey shops that would be worth a visit en route to Newmarket tomorrow. Am looking for big ones though - on the scale of Ingatestone in Essex, for instance. Any ideas?
horsatack in MK or RB equestrian at Brickhills just outside MK. Not sure how they compare to the place you mentioned in essex as never been but they are prety much the biggest ones local to MK. there's also Derby house in Oney although their shop isn't that big compared to the original DH in lancashire
i know its actually in Newmarket and probably not on the same scale, but Horse Requisites in Newmarket, is absolutely fab. i love it. its not huge but very very good

Aha, we went to that one last year when we were in Newmarket!!!
equicentric - in little downham near Ely (you may go near-ish on your way to n'mkt) is not huge but is GORGEOUS and has a little second hand section upstairs. you get offered tea and coffee etc there... and they even had cakes once to nibble on whilst you browsed.... sooooo friendly and quaint.
Got to agree, Horse Requisites in Newmarket is Great! Theres another one in Newmarket, can't remember what it's called, it's tiny but really good aswell! Think it might be called Gibsons!
Another recomendation for RB Equestrian, just off the A5. Lovely knowledgeable staff, good range and selection and they won the BETA retailer of the year. PM me is you want directions
definately Little Downham, wasn't over impressed with Horse requisties when i went in the other day(sorry).
Sandon Saddlery is brill, its like a tardis and soooo much stuff too
There's Gibsons in Newmarket. As for Sandon Saddlery......be prepared to walk around with your hands in your pockets 'cos they tend to look at you as if you are a potential shoplifter! (Lots of people have noticed this!) Also, Dawn Dodd-Nobel, the old girl who runs it, tends to corner you into buying what you don't want! On AT LEAST two occasions, I have gone into the shop with the intention of buying a second hand saddle...........and come out with a new one!!!!! It's like taking a step back in time and well worth a visit, though! Not far off the A10 between Buntingford and Royston (close to where all the body parts have been found recently!!!!!). H&H did a big double page article about the shop a couple of years ago - it's a bit of an Aladdin's Cave! Oh, and if you get chatting to Miss D-N, ask her about her donkey dressage (yes!!!). Would love to hear from you if you dare to venture down the twisty, single track roads to Sandon........
Oh please go to Sandon and then tell me how you got on and what you think. I'm giggling at the thought of it. Make sure you have lots of time if you buy something as you have to wait for them to calculate the cost and then write out the receipt.
I venture that way regularly. In fact I an one of a few customers who are allowed to wander freely round the shop. Doesn't stop them trying to sell me peculiar things though. Last week DDN tries to sell me a set of boots suitable for a 12.2, despite my daughter now being 18.
Oh, God, yes - I'd forgotten about those hand written receipts! When my daughter was younger (she's almost twenty now), even if we bought sweets there, everything was listed on a handwritten receipt! Hilarious! And once, all we wanted was a head rope, but we were told the one we chose wouldn't be acceptable at Pony Club Camp and we should choose another..........and don't forget the Donkey Dressage (or did you never get involved in the conversaton?!?!?!)!
Oooooh! _MisElz_, I do hope you've read all the Sandon Saddlery banter - you really MUST go there....and report back! We need a blow by blow account! I can give you directions!!!!!!
I was pre warned many years ago about the Donkey Dressage.
I just love the it, even though it traumatises me for the next few weeks. It is like stepping back in time but you can still buy a Mars Bar or a packet of Refreshers. _MisElz_ you will find those next to the 300 saddles stacked up.lol
If you see some nice gloves being modeled on some realistic looking hands.....dont touch them............
i recently took a leather headcollar back there (bargain at 13 quid) as the strap was too wide for buckle so i couldnt undo it
dear old DDN said 'oh dont be silly just put some warm oil on it' she proceeded to remove the headcollar from my hands and come back with it oiled and a can of leather oil that i could have for free as the headcollar had a mild fault (i also left with 40 pence worth of sweeties all accounted for on a famous handwritten reciept but shhhh thats a secret)
Oh it does make me laugh and slightly scares me at the same time. I might have to go there this week now. I dont need anything but i'm sure DDN will find me something I dont need.
We should all meet up and go on a Sandon spree and whoever walks out having spent the least can buy the first drink at the Jolly Wagners
oo oo oo i want to do it now lol
but i think we all have to buy sweets infact i could do with a body protector at some point, oh and i need new chaps hmmmmmm
You HAVE to go to Sandon Saddlery on the way there is the barn shop which is large and another horsey shop in sandon but omg it is an experience you will never forget hahaha. If you get the very old woman serving you you may be there for hours listening to her tails of side saddle. But be prepared if you dont want something be prepared to run as she may get very angry haha I didnt want some stirrup leathers for some stirrups i bought and she got soooo angry i had to leave hehe. We swore wed never go again and we did, they had some little rossetes for the brooke and she was telling someone who was doing some sort of show to colour the rossetes in lmao it is an experience you must go and tell us what happens
