Just curious how you got started?

I have a male of a rare breed and I’ve really fallen in love with the breed in general. I’ve never considered breeding before but I have always thought it would be a lovely thing to be involved in, preserving and improving a breed that is. I don’t plan to be a puppy farmer but more a hobby breeder if anything.

I have a large house, work from home and have experience in dog training and behaviour as well as veterinary knowledge. I would health test any dog to the eyeballs so no need to worry about that and any dog would be kept for life as a family pets.

I’m not sure I want to breed my male, I don’t know if he’s good enough for a start but am in the process of preparing him for some showing classes to hopefully find out. I could also meet some other people hopefully when I’m out there as there’s very few around. I’m not sure whether to spend time campaigning him and then seeing if I can find a female for myself to also show and possibly breed from ifis good enough.

Where would I go about finding a female to start a line? Is it just about contacting breeders and asking?

If you were considering this sort of thing what should I do to make my dogs stand out. Are show results the main thing or is that not relevant for the majority of people?

As well as the relevant health tests, a show grade and the minimum relevant working test (if applicable) help to prove he is a good example of his breed.
Join a breed club, make connections with more experienced breeders.
If the gene pool is small, consider importing a female.

Generally I think you have the right idea, providing you don't want to breed Man Eating Peruvian Monster Hounds ?

Shows will be your best bet...if your dog is a good sort people with bitches will want him then you know you can breed him for yourself and they may want his progeny :p

Definatley not man eating anything. More lazy sleeping cuddle hound if anything ?

My plan for this year providing Covid stays under control is to attend lots of ringcraft and some champ shows to see how we do. He has already been best of breed more than once at some
KC shows but not champ ones. The shows are not usually well attended though perhaps 3-4 in a class maximum.
I’ve met a couple of people at these but I’m not too sure how to get more involved other than a quick hello! The breed seems to be more popular in the south than where I am and that’s where the secretary etc tend to be based.

The gene pool is tiny! I wouldn’t be adverse to importing and infact think it would be a good think however I wouldn’t have a clue where to start or how to know if I’m getting a good quality bitch. I would be relying on other breeders really to give me an idea.

Looks like showing is the way to go!

Hi. I'm a long term lurker but 1st time poster here! I too have a very rare breed, an Icelandic Sheepdog (we also have 2 Icelandic Horses). He is one of 13 known adults in the UK. 6 weeks ago the first litter in over 50 years was born (4 pups). The breed is not recognised by the Kennel Club yet as we do not have enough dogs in the UK for them to consider us yet!

Storm is 7 months old and was born in Iceland. I did about 2 - 3 years research and "stalked" breeders on facebook from Europe, the US and Iceland off course. As I cannot show him in breed classes (not KC recognised) the plan is to compete at Obedience, Rally, Scentwork and possibly Agility. His breeder is already planning his future breeding career here in the UK. He will off course have all his breed recommended health test and will have to pass all before any breeding will even be thought of!

As has been said you just have to be confident and talk to people, join the breed club if you have one (we don't as yet). I have been involved with Cairn Terriers for 25+ years and only got to know people/things by going to shows and chatting to other owners about their dogs. 264253592_410426460776791_7316202972321686430_n.jpg

What breed is it you have..??
Using your boy at stud may prove tricky if the gene pool is small so you may need to either import a female yourself or discuss with other breeders doing so. Have you spoken to the breeder you got your boy from.?? I would consider this to be your first port of call esp as you may need to check any endorsements x

Hi,

Appologies for this message out-of-the-blue and the slight sidetrack from the original thread.

I came across this post when researching Islandic Sheepdog breeders in the UK, as it's one of the very few mentions of an icelandic sheepdog in the UK! The pictures of your dog are beautiful.

Having done a lot of research I think that an icelandic sheepdog might be the pperfect fit. However I live in Scotland and it does not seem like there are any breeders currently in the UK? Therefore, I wanted to reach out with this message and ask if you possibly had any updates or further information on the status of the breed in the UK, since your post from 2021? Or any advice on contacting breeders abroad / in Iceland, although if possible would really like to support the breed in the UK.

Any info you might be able to share would be really appreciated!
