Any Bulldog people, any advice appreciated.

You'd be surprised at the amount of (breeders in particular) who think they know so much more than 'those vets down the road'. When you hear what these breeders think you would be amazed. Feeding pups on 80p rolls of meat from asda and wondering why they arent doing well, dogs with sarcoptic mange brought in, with the whole litter affected and the owner didn't notice..A dog being unwell is a a signal for all sorts of concoctions-eyes are a particular love for putting all sorts of lotions and potions in. Being told not to vaccinate, not to worm because of 'chemicals' , the list goes on. Breeders are responsible for far more harm than vets who at least make an effort to educate themselves. As for vets 'loving' pointing out faults in new pups-oh yes, thats what they go to bed thinking of I'msure *eyeroll*
 
Actually my opinions are based on forty years of breeding fine dogs..oh and working "on the other side of the counter". Newly fledged vets need guiding often by the older experienced vets in the practice or experienced vet nurses,a novice owner asking a new vet is`nt a lot better than google..except he/she can trot round the back to ask or look up stuff and dosages.
Not all breeders are idiots ..far from it.
 
Ive had my Bulldog for 5 years. When we first got him as a 9 week old puppy, I was advised by a chain named vet to get him operated on (hips) urgently or send him back.

I then went to a independant vets who specalise in BB's and he informed me they were perfect.

The breed is so quirky, that alot of vets could mis-inform you.

He's breathing isn't as good as our American Bulldog obviously, but he's fit and heathly. He knows his limitations and we know ours. We don't take him on really long walks and we keep him cool in summer.

I love the breed dearly, and I havent been put off, that said, I do think weve been extremely lucky with him. (touches wood!)

There would be an awful lot of bulldoggers out there with exactly the same experience.The media can be a pain..for instance there is an idiot writing in Dogs Today who stated that mini bull terriers only lived to six years old.I would be disappointed if one of mine did`nt get to twelve,now his facts were taken from a survey of just twenty minis..obviously from animals with berieved owners .But of course,a survey! Oh ,that must be true.Obviously me,a mere breeder ,having contact with many many of them knew far less.Treated sensibly a bulldog is a lot more athletic than you would ever think.....jumping from a standing start up onto a table to nick a cake is normal!:D
 
'Not all breeders are idiots ..far from it. ' Exactly my point... Not all newly qualified(or experienced) vets are idiots-far from it. I have also seen both sides of it, bad and good on both sides
 
We have a bulldog, he is kept very fit and gives my JR a run for his money. When it is hot we limit his long walks, take him 1st thing in morn and last thing at night. He has a cool coat and I have an old sandpit which we fill with water for him to dip in ( he loves it)


There are good and bad in any breed , we researched the breed in depth, spoke to lots of breeders and chose our dog very carefully. Our vets are very impressed with him, say he is one of the best they have seen. Our dogs breeders have successfully had lots of selfwelping litters, this was one of the main things I was looking for.
 
I own a bulldog, who is shown, was at crufts, spends all his days at the stables with my Samoyed who has stamina of steel and he keeps up with him always! He has walked parts of the peak district, is happy, healthy and content, he has a nature to die for. I don't walk him far in summer but I wouldn't walk ANY dog far in summer. Our Bully makes us smile every single day, he's a gentle soul and when I hear people slagging them off it makes me so sad, I'd defy any animal friendly person to spend a whole day with mine and not fall in love with him.
