Hi, I’m one of your newbies having defected from another forum (won’t say which!!) and your forum comes highly recommended! I’m an event rider and am just in the process of setting up my own yard having hired someone else’s for years. This means I am now in charge of everything, all the day to day stuff and my owners too! Anyone got any tips on running your own yard successfully or more importantly is there anywhere I can go to get professional help with the business side of things? bit crap with that stuff to be totally fair! In the south devon, totnes area if you know anyone who can help and prepared to travel (once ). L.

Don't know anyone in that area at all but you couldn't go much wrong by joining that new website manage my horse.com I joined after reading about it in horsemart this month (and in Bell equine) and if you run a business it will keep all your paperwork organised and you can print reports to hand over to an accountant when you find one (sorry can't help with that one). My trainer joined when I raved about it and she's now keeping notes on all her training session with her horses and is literally giving the owners print outs now off the site, they love it and she doesn't spend so much time with them telling them the same story about what she's done all week wasting time! She is going to organise her whole season on here after christmas when she starts work on her horses after their holidays. Only a thought but a good place to start. Welcome to the forum anyway!!! Sure lots of people will be able to help! Oh yeh and it doesn't cost anything - unlike a business advisor!!

crikey how long did that take you to type!! See I possess no business skills whatsoever. I am typing this with 1 finger!! Will it teach me to type? LOL Will defo look at that. Thank ernikins. Will rock and roll there now.

I joined them last week and it is seriously impressive, I have been back every night since filling in my horse profiles. I think I must have told everyone I know, even my god mother in the US who joined and has told people in her barn (as they call it). I'm not a pro rider but it's just as good for us ordinary horse owners!!

got it googled it, just registered and this will help, pukka. Thanks. Still need an accountant in near totnes. pm with details if any good suggestions. Going to get me neds on the site now will take allnight with the old one finger jobby. lol

If you come on here enough, you'll soon type like a pro! Though best not to come on here too much as you'll never get any work done....like me!!

quite and it gets worse ... have you joined manage my horse? well you'll never get any work done if you have it's a bit addictive to say the least and I am proper impressed too Good job it's free. I've been at it all night and my finger is sore! LOL.

hello and welcome, you are very near to us (we're 8 miles from the trago roundabout) and my daughter is always keen to know other local event riders, often she would love to meet to hire Winkleigh for instance , it's much more fun with two of you.
We are in the process of building a new stable block to take schooling liveries, it's already grown from six boxes to seven and a loo/rest room, and we plan to build lots of training fences round the farm too.
I would advise talking to your local small business association (there will be one) who will point you towards grants and business advice.
Hopefully we can meet up before too long, my daughter has been competing a black stallion this year at most of the local events, and is on here as Cazcrazyjonty..

cool henryhorn and thanks to everyone that PM'd me got plently to get me going. Going to bed now or I won't get up and early mornings are part of the territory (dont we know it). I have to say the recco's have been so good and glad I came on here. Ihave to say that website manage my horse is unbelievable and that tip alone was worth the raw fingees! . night all.

put it this way I am just on morning break and I've been on it again, for me a business I'll be on everyday! but I've spent the whole night practically looking round and it will be recommending it to anyone with horses at all. all my liveries will be on it by the weekend lol there is so much to do on it I'm sure I've not found it all. I just added a wormer to one horse profile and there's even a button to add the same info to the profile of all the horses i've added pukka or what. Can you belive its free thought it was a joke at first or not quite for real.

Must drag self away..........

On a different note, wishing you all the best in your new venture. My yard is just over a year old now and it has certainly been an interesting experience so far. However, on the whole I'm lucky with the horses and the people, although the people are most definately more difficult to manage than the horses
