Just moved yards and we are going to see a mini tonight (miniature horse) sounds ideal for our needs (pet, companion and some family showing) well handled etc etc, what I wondered, not that it would majorly sway any decision, is if it is a creamy grey colour now, what colour would it possibly be able to go???

Its dad is spotted and mum is grey I think...the current owner thought it may go palamino, it may go grey, but its kind of cream at the moment - all of it!

Good Luck on your new yard for a start.

Hmm, isn't grey dominant, so if one parent is grey then the foal is likely to be too? Skin colour could be a clue as to whether it might spot out eventually, also the usual appy clues, spotty skin around the eyes, stripy hooves.

I believe Chambon is well up on colour genetics, for a palomino I believe one parent has to be palomino or cremello. I don't think they change to palomino. I have a bay mare with a palomino foal by a palomino stallion and the percentage of that was less than 25%.

I did pop on to Color calculator but it has its' limitations, cannot find appaloosa, or spotted, or even grey

Smoky black, perlino, and all colours in between, some of which I have no idea what they are, so it wasn't much help at all.

Pictures please. Mini's seem to have a mind of their own when it comes to colour, look at the changes in Inky and Cashew with the seasons.

Do you know the base coat of the spotted pony?

If it is buckskin or palomino then there is a chance the pony you're going to see is actually cremello or perlino - does he have blue eyes? If he does then there's definitely a chance, if he doesn't then he's either a very light palomino or is grey

If mum is definitely grey & not light pally or cream then there's a 50% chance the pony you're going to see is grey. If neither parent has any cream then you definitely won't be looking at a pally

Grey IS dominant, so regardless of other parent, there's a 50:50 chance the offspring will go grey. If the grey parent is carrying a "double dose" of the grey gene, then ALL their offspring will go grey. Problem is, you can't tell by looking at them whether they're single dose or double dose.
Spotty is also quite dominant, but in varying degrees.

The foal could go palomino, it depends on the base colours of the parents. (e/g what colours are hidden by spots and grey-ness!)

Are you sure its grey? I know that sounds silly but if its got a creamy look to it it may not be a true grey and instead be a "silver" This is the silver dapple gene which throws a whole new spanner into the works of colours. It is quite common in miniature horses. My mini Inky is a chocolate silver dapple and just to show you how a "grey" can change look at Inky below ( a change of just three months )

How old is the mini? If you had some pictures i might be able to tell whether it carries silver. It would be nice to see whether the parents are carriers of silver. Silver is great it produces a wide variety of colours. Another indication is stripped hooves.

Right, we are having the little fellow (Winkfield Jersey Cream!), I have put photos below. He is not in the same league as Inky LOL! - but for starters I wanted to see how my daughter gets on with minis before shelling out huge amounts of money!

Got his parents wrong! - his dad is apaloosa with spotty bum, mum is palamino. He has very faint white stripe down his face and dark eyes, def not cremello...may go grey....may go darker, his skin is dark....he is cute and very friendly without being bargy so should be fantastic!

His birthday is 20 June 2007, he will be a year old and just been gelded bless him! He is all legs!

look carefully you will see white blaze on face....

I would say that he is going to stay cream, for a few weeks when his summer coat comes thru he'll be more golden, and then he'll get bleached and turn cream again

Very cute.
