Any Doberman Owners??

Hello all, I've not ventured into this section before now, but am looking for some advice.

My OH and I are currently living with my parents (starting own business so it suits at the moment) but will be looking to get our own place at some point later in the year. I've already told OH that a house isn't a home without a dog, and one of the first things I will be doing is getting myself a pup!

I absolutely adore dobes, but have never had one. Have had Labs most of my life and currently have a Lab and a mini Schnauzer at home...

Whatever dog I get will be able to come to work with me, come to the yard with, etc. so will get lots of exercise, attention, socialisation.

Can anyone tell me about Dobermans? I'm assuming they need lots of mental and physical stimulation, but have hear they can be great family pets if brought up right.
And any photos would be great!

i absolutely adore them one of my friends mums has one she walks him like 6miles or more a day just to keep him reasonably sane, keeps her fit to

the ones I board and OH walks are enough to give me a mini stroke......they are whingey dogs and are masters of unlearning somthing u have spent alot of time perfecting

They do eventually mature and make life easier..but they never lose the annoying whinge

If you get one, lots of socialising, lots of exercise and lots of, early recall practice

our Dobermann is very different to the ones above!

she is basically a 42kg lap dog!!
she loves cuddles and kisses and will sit for hours at your feet or gazing into your eyes.

she doesn't need a lot of exercise at all, in fact she is quite lazy.
she loves her walks but doesn't need to go far and it very quiet and easy at home- she sleeps about 20 hours of the day!

she is extremely sociable, loves people and is good with children, very gentle.
she loves going to places like Badminton where she always attracts lots of admirers who come over and pet her and she sits like a statue lapping it up.

her recall is pretty poor but we have gotten around this by always carrying cheese!
she comes hurtling back for a bit of cheese but is very quick to catch on if you go for a walk with empty pockets.

she is just the most gorgeous family dog and i would have another in a heartbeat.

The Dobie we have now whines constantly, she is incredibly destructive in the house, I have lost count of the number of indestructable beds and vet beds she has destroyed, but the worst part of her behaviour/character is that having taught her something you then have to go on and on teaching/reinforcing it. She is a real whimp, cant bear going outside in the rain or the cold, even if she has her coat on! At four years old, she is still very immature, bouncing around like an idiot crashing into furniture and people!

To be fair, there are also good things, she is a great guard dog, letting us know when someone is around, but she is very cuddly too. She doesnt need a huge amount of exercise, once she has had a run she just likes to curl up in the warmest most comfy spot and sleep undisturbed.

As with any breed, there will be good and bad stories, I think you need to go and spend time with them to really get a feel for their character, to see if they are the right one for you.

Our next door neighbour (who bred our Schnauzer) has one and had a litter last year. She is planning another litter this year so I may have one of her pups.
I absolutely adore their bitch, but would want a dog myself.

Do you have any photos? Would love to see pics that aren't from a breeders website of them all standing to attention. (All I can seem to find online)
 
We have 3 dobes.. one is a rescue, we got him when he was 5 and the other two we got when they where pups.. the male is now 4 and our bitch is almost 2..they are just a fantastic breed, they lie on the sofa and chill out with me, but then they like going to the stables and running around down there, they go to horse shows with me and we take them on holiday with us.. like cayla says our youngest done have the best recall but the other two are fine.. We show the youngest two and they are just very loving towards us but on the other hand they are also very protective when they have to be.. My husband works nights and i never ever feel wary in the house myself.. Well.. i aint myself.. i have 3 dobes usually squashing me as they all try and lie on the sofa beside me.. Good luck with your dobe hunt. Be careful and buy from a responisible breeder,, you will have endless joy and fun with your new friend..
 
I was quite surprised by Caylas opinion of Dobes. I have had the breed for 25 years and can't see me with anything else really.
My Cara is the perfect dog really. She goes everywhere with me, never moans about much, if i whistle she turns on a sixpence to come back. Very smart and very quick to learn. Loves her walks and her time at the yard then comes home and sleeps for the afternoon. If her water dish needs topped up, she woofs to tell me. Very clean in the house, i call her my baby wipe dog as my friends collies etc need hosed and she just needs a wipe down. Brilliant with my 11 year old son and his friends. Very loving. Great guard dog, knows everything that is going on, including hearing my car from the end of the road. Never did more chewing than the normal teething puppy.

I have a new one who is a year old, i just got her a few weeks ago. Because she wasn't brought up by me she isn't trained quite the same but her recalls are now great and she is learning the ropes at the yard. She can be a bit whiney if left in the stable whilst i ride or do anything but it is all new to her and she is still getting to grips with it. Again, very clever and affectionate.

The only negative i would say is that Cara is a cold tattie, she needs her jacket on when it is chilly and certainly in the rain. They are renowned for hating rain.

If i were to give you any advice, i would say to watch the breeding. The fashion these days seems to be to use continental dogs for stud and IMO they aren't bred for the same temperament as our dogs, much sharper.

They are big strong dogs and I would advise a bitch if you are new to the breed as they are easier than dogs to train.

Like any dog, they are only as good as their training and upbringing.
