I was just wondering whether my wrist is worth going to the doctors about! It has been hurting for the past few weeks but this week has been very painful and cant put any wait on it, i get a sharp pain when i bend it backwards and forwards, just wondering what you think it could be, I dont think its broken/fractured because surely I would be in agony pain??

Thanks

Just got my dad to read this... (he's a surgeon) and he said it most likely isn't broken but could potentially be cracked (unlikely but possible!) If it's worrying you and really painful it can't hurt to go to the GP... oh and make sure you are taking 4 hourly pain killers...

It is unlikely to broken if you have not had any direct trauma unless you have an unusual bone condition which I think you would know about already. If you have fallen on it or injured it immediately prior to the pain then you need to get it checked by your GP. If you have had it a few weeks it is not an emergency. Have you taken any painkillers.

It sounds like either carpal tunnel syndrome or something similar which will be inflamatory in nature. If you can take ibuprofen try that 3 times a day for a few days with ice packs. Also if you type a lot or do any repetitive movements at work try to avoid them. If this does not work see your GP but you need to try the self help route first.

more likely to have sprained a ligament rather than broken something, try an antiinflamatory such as ibuprofen (see recommended dose), and maybe a tubegrip, whilst steering clear of using it too much i.e. using your wrist to suppor theavy objects, if it gets worse see your gp.

Have you HAD a trauma to your wrist - something like a fall - when the pain started?? If not, it's VERY unlikely to be broken. One of my girls had a crush injury to her foot today (horse slipped in mud and fell sideways against a solid bank - crushing her foot.) She was in absolute agony - even after an hour of elevation, icepacks, and enough anti-inflammatories to make a lame horse sound - so got her packed off to hospital suspecting broken bones. Just got a call to say it was 'just' sprain and very bad bruising!

Your wrist sounds like Repetitive Stress Injury. You can get it from typing or any repetitive movement that puts even a slight strain on the wrist (or elbow!) I would bandage it to immobilise and wear a sling to enforce total rest for 24 hours - or until you can get an appointment with your GP. Anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen) should help.

sounds like rsi, mine came on quickly in 2007 and it was hell, it still can be in the one that hasnt been operated on (last month). theyll suggest splints / anti inflammatories / physio / acupuncture and cortisone injections first. mine got so bad i couldnt cut up my food or dress myself and apparently i would be hugging it under my neck in bed grimacing in pain. my STRONGEST advice is seek help now, dont leave it, i did.
