Any dog groomers??

Ok so having taken my two dogs for a hair cut, i think it could be a good little business, which i would love to have a go at.
So i need to go on a course/ courses but which?
Also there seems to be alot of internet courses where you learn at home?

So basically i dont want to hand over money and find ive done a rubbish course that means nothing.

Any info on courses or any other aspect of becoming a dog groomer would be great!

P.s im in Cheshire if thats of any help?

There are a few people here who are trained groomers. Although when I previously asked many said it was long hours, back breaking work and nothing more disappointing to spend hours sorting a matted dog etc only for them to come back 8 weeks later just as bad.
 
I bet the lady who does my dogs feels like that!

I think i will really enjoy it, and the women who does mine is always booked up for 2 months in advance. Hmm just could do with info as the web is full of stuff, but i dont know what to read and whats rubbish!

However, he can no longer do larger breeds due to his bad back as he has been clipping for 25 years and there were no such things as hydraulic tables when he started!

It was something I always wanted to do as well, but like you don't know where to start and also don't know if it would be worth it.

And naughty, naughty on sending your dogs back all messy!

More important than anything u will need some serious hours worth of hands on in a grooming parlour...starting from basics...u can also enrol in a college corse to carry out the written work.

Ask at your local grooming parlour if they take people on.

I learn to do grooming at an agricultural college...it was an option u could take ....as it was not part of the course...I also attended a grooming parlour for over a year for hands on....I learn how to style, along side completing written work in regard to tools/health and safety/coat types/anatomy/breeds e,t,c.

I left college and went into nursing then picked the grooming up 2 years later...to help my mam out...as she was paying a fortune to have her rescues cut before re-homing.

It is hard work...esp those clients that never use a brush inbetween cuts

I had myown parlour...and had to pack it in due to a serious ongoing illness.
I now do it in my spare time.....infact I have just been up the vets to do a shih-tzu and 2 westis, I can pick and choose what I do....but in new business u have to do them all...and some can literally have u in tears

I do enjoy my regular clients....as kept maintained inbetween cuts.

So true! I groomed for a living for over 15 years and still do the odd poodle. It is bl**dy hard, soul-destroying work. If people neglected their children like that, they'd be in court but you do get some degree of job satisfaction when you send something home looking a million dollars (even if it does come back a few weeks later filthy and matted again!)
 
Thankyou for both your input. My local ag college does two courses one for beginners and one for advanced. Or i have seen a course for 20 days but that might be a problem as would have to live there for it. At the min its just another option that i am seriously considering. I might PM you in the near future cala if you dont mind?
