i don't do endurance but my friend is on the board of directors for endurance gb - she was gb champion a couple of times i think.... i rode out with her a few times on one of her endurance horses
Yes me! I've got a couple of advanced horses... though I'm still working my way up the grades. There's a great book out which will tell you everything you need to know... called Endurance: Start to Finish by the late Marcy Pavord. But feel free to ask any questions... I'll do my best to answer
oh lovely thank you perhaps i will just buy the book and have a bed time read rather than bombard you with random questions !!
i just really enjoy keeping my horse fit and wanted to learn about the teachniques and training programmes that endurance riders use and see if i can use some of them in my routine.
i think i am perhaps a closet long distance rider thats slowly emerging, my pony seems to love it too she just keeps going and going only problem is im running out of places to go!!
Endurance riding is very addictive and perhaps the only truly amateur sport left. Organised rides are great because not only do you get to ride on otherwise off limits land, you have targets to aim at (speed/gradings etc) and it gives your riding at home some structure as you know what you're aiming at. Plus the people are very friendly and helpful so you'll learn lots just by chatting at rides. And the more you do the more you want to do... either by upping your distance or upping your speed. If you're running out of new places to ride then doing some EGB rides would solve your problem
Your local EGB group would seem to the South east. This is their website:
I did it for 10 years, right up to 100 miles, long listed young riders - only just switched to eventing in the past season.
If you want a book, I can not recommend The Endurance Horse by Ann Hyland or America's Long Distance Challenge by Karen Paulo highly enough. They go into far greather depth in my opinion and the latter covers Interval Training in great detail. But Marcy's is a great starter book
Please ask any questions I will do my best to answer or pm'd if you prefer. It really is great fun!
thanks for book ideas and links guys.
i think i will get the marcy pavord book and have a good read then come back with my questions.
at the moment im doing about 10 miles at speed comfortably and more than ready to push on for more - i just need to buy a key so i can access further land and farmland which im hoping to do asap as this has more long stretches and hills. in the mean time ive been doing a lot of road work which i enjoy anyway so doesnt bother me.
i will read the book and no doubt have questions so drop you guys pm's if you dont mind in future many thanks!
