My horse was kicked in the elbow on Monday. Small wound treated it myself. Did not appear to be lame. By Thursday he had an infected leg and could not walk. Called vet who gave him antibiotics and bute and said leave him out and walk 3 times a day. Today swelling has completely gone on his leg but his elbow is still somewhat swollen. He is sound in walk but slightly unsound in trot. Vet said to call him Tuesday and he may have to go in for X rays. Do you think he could be lame from the wound or do you think that he may have chipped his bone. Anyone with any experience or help I would be very grateful
Thanks

Nasty. If it was from a kick then it's likely to be bruised too which could be what is making him lame; hopefully it will need nothing but time to get right.
Only thing I can tell you and not at all cheerful is a filly of mine got splatted in the field, run into by a cob; she could hardly move although not a mark on her. Had x rays and she had completely smashed her elbow; we had no other choice than to put her down. I hope yours goes on well, keep us posted.

Thanks for reply. Sorry about your poor filly.Starting to worry now as Tuesday getting closer.I dont know if vet meant to bring him in if he was still really lame or if he was just sligtly lame . I asked him worst case scenario and he said operation and 15 days in hospital. Do you think it would it be okay to ask for vet to give him some more time.

If there is a possibility he may have fractured it don't waste any time - my horse kicked my YO's horse a couple of weeks ago and fractured his hock (freak accident - we think they were playing) but he as now got a bone infection and has been given a 50:50 chance of survival

It's not just the broken bone you need to worry about - infection is the worst thing.

If my vet was worried my horse may have a fracture, I'd want to be down there sooner rather than later. If it turns out to be nothing serious, then it's £150 or whatever but at least if it is serious, you'll hopefully be able to treat it. I hope it does turn out to be bruising.

i would ask the vet to take scans and xrays if the wound isnt healing. my horse had a similar wound but on his cannon bone that just wouldnt heal, after 3 weeks of antibtiotics etc he was xrayed and he has a fracture.

let us know how your horse gets on with the vets, i wil keep my fingers crossed for you

One of my horses was damaged when being ridden by one of my liveries. I called the vet in when he didn't come sound over a short period of time. Vet told me to keep buting him for another month and stable overnight and turn out in small paddock during day. I did this but I was sure there was something broken so ask vet to x-ray. Twice he has refused to x-ray, over the past year, however yesterday I MADE him x-ray my horse so am waiting on the results. I do not think it will be positive as horse is still unsound, however at least I will know more and will then have options available to me. Worst case, he will be put to sleep - bloody shame as he is only 9 years old, very nicely put together and is a truly lovely horse.

Good luck in finding out what is wrong with you boy - fingers crossed.
