Any experience on herbal sarcoid treatments? Do they work??

My 5 year old cob has just started treatment for his sarciods. He is having Liverpool cream applied every other day for 5 days. I really hope this treatment works however I am thinking that I could also start feeding him some kind of herbal supplement. I have been advised of Forest Farmacy, but does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

Sarc-Ex has worked for my mare. I was very sceptical about trying it, but since I started her on it in May all her sarcoids except 1 have gone, and the one left is smaller. She has 3 of the small scoops twice a day. Hopefully in another few months I will have a sarcoid free horse.

She had quite a few occult sarcoids and about 5 nodular ones.

I have previously had 1 frozen off and that worked well too - it didn't grow back.

Yes. I bought the 1kg tubes, but once I could see they were going, I bought the bigger 5kg tubes which works out cheaper.

My vet said not to bother with herbal remedies, but I thought I would give it a go (as it wouldn't do any harm, even if it didn't do any good) and am really pleased with the results. Some of the nodular ones were over a big vein so they couldn't be frozen/cut off or treated with Liverpool cream.

It took about 3 months before I could see a clear difference, so don't expect results straight away.

Not herbal - but had great results with crest toothpaste! All but one large one fell over, and even the large one halved in size.

Horse was sold before the end of "treatment", so unsure if it did ever fall off.

Thuja is great. We had a pony with a huge sarcoid and we tried sarcX and it just made it angry. We gave 3 Thuja at least 3 times a day and lumps fell off it and then it was all gone in 2 months. When another horse developed a small sarcoid we immediately gave thuja and it was gone in a few weeks. We got it direct from www.helios.co.uk

Our old TB (28) had a load growing on one side between his back legs. They were bleeding and horrid (two main ones). After talking to the vet and my dad 'joking' about putting cable ties round them, we actually went ahead and did it. They stopped bleeding and, within 2 to 3 weeks both had fallen off! They have not grown back.

Another for Sarc-ex, but I also used Restore liquid with it too. I'll post pictures a bit later as I'm on my phone.

Done both, in all honesty I think it depends what sort of sarcoids your horse has and how much their immune system is struggling. I think pretty much the Liverpool cream is the best, but if you back it up with Sarc-Ex you are supporting your horse from the inside as well.

I used Global Herbs Sarc-x and Immune plus alongside Liverpool cream treatment for 2 large sarcoids earlier this year. They both came off far quicker than was expected and seem to have cleared up completely. However at the same time my mare was having BCG injections into another sarcoid under her eye and that wasn't working properly so I then stopped the Sarc-x and Immune plus and that sarcoid then cleared up. It seemed to me that the Sarc-x and Immune plus worked with the Liverpool cream but against the BCG injections but this is only my experience and I would like to hear if anyone else has found the same. The other interesting point is that since stopping all treatment 2 other sarcoids have cleared up completely by themselves!

Can I ask why you want to avoid using it? LPool Cream is something that has been extensively tested and it works. It isn't black magic or nonsense like the so-called herbal remedies, which have no scientific testing to back them up. Global Herbs stuff is particularly rubbish IMHO - if you can manage to get them to give you their "secret" recipes, you will see that all they seem to have done is Googled "things that might have some association with helping skin conditions / bacteria/ insert whatever ailment your horse has" and bunged the whole lot into a container. I spoke to them about Restore once. It contained something like 25 difference herbal remedies, or some insane amount. Some herbal or plant remedies can have effects (asprin/ willow bark is a good example) and how do GH know that none of these plant extracts interact with each other?

Would YOU take a herbal remedy (I won't use the word medicine, because medicines are tested and proven to work) with that many ingredients? Of course not. So why feed it to your horse?

I believe there is something to be said for supporting the immune system but seriously, rather than spending a fortune on supplements that aren't proven, just feed your horse a good diet, make sure s/he is in good health, worked, warm, and generally looked after.

The toothpaste worked for me too, killed off a large one on my boy,s sheath, over a year ago now and no sign of it reappearing!

This is how it started, I asked the vet if it was worth tying off or treating, she said as my horse was young (4) she may grow out of it but best leave it alone as where it was could leave a nasty scar but recommended Sarc ex.

Bought a tub of Sarc ex and a bottle of Restore as recommended on the sarc ex tub, this was June 30th through to September and the last pic will be from the weekend

As it was quite weepy I put purple spray on to keep it 'dry' and she wore a fly rug pretty much 24/7

Then it fell off

I cleaned it with Salt water, dried it with cotton wool balls and packed sudocreme into it and sprayed purple spray around the fleshy part. After a while I just purple sprayed it while it continued to shrink

And taken on the weekend

She also had the start of one on her chest and one under left eye but they also cleared up

My horse had one flat one when I bought him about the size of a 50p, he then developed 3 more over the next year. Pictures were sent to Liverpool who recommended the cream. As the cream is painful for the horses and expensive I thought I would try Sarc-Ex first. Global Herbs advised they help in around 70% of cases and if the supplement is going to work it will work within 3-6 months. Within around 4 months they had started shrinking and within a year they had completely disappeared and no more have appeared. I took him off the supplement 6 months after the last one dropped off. The problem with the cream is it doesn't stop them recurring, it just kills the ones that are there.
