My gelding was kicked on his off hind hock in the beginning of summer. It swelled up like a balloon and he was very lame in it. The day I noticed it I had a vet out the next day. Rest, anti-biotics and painkillers were subscribed.
6 weeks later the vet came out to see Obie who deemed him sound so I started to bring Obie back into work. He didn't feel quite right, very sore just behind the saddle so I kept him to gentle hack and schooling. However, he was very reluctant to work in an outline.
Obie is the most placid horse you could ever meet. He's extremely affectionate and is always looking to interact with you.
I had his back booked in to be done a couple of weeks in bringing back into work, but after he was getting really angry and trying to bite you (not in his character AT ALL) when I was simply grooming his back I decided to give him time off until Sam could see him.
Chiropractor saw him and stated him being very tight through the lumbar region of his back. You could see Obie physically dropping and becoming so hollow. Sam worked wonders but really thinks that further investigation needs to go into his hock as he is intermittently toe tapping.
Chrio is back on Wednesday for a follow up session and vet on Thrusday to discuss scans and x-rays.
Has anyone any thoughts or experiences? He's sound but I am not going to ride him if he's compensating the lack of flexion in his hock by using his back.

My mare was kicked on the off hind when she was young, resulted in shattered splint bone.

Box rest then turnout she was kicked again 3 more times on top of the original injury.

i kept her box tilled healed and moved yard.

Since then she now has a touch of arthritis there leg is more filled but otherwise its ok.

I wouldnt ride him while he isnt right.
My mares son sacral kept going out first time it did resulted in me being broncked off and nearly ending up with the angels. .

Wait till vet has seen him and until he has been given the all clear.
not nice to be ridden when your in pain:)

My mare started to feel abit uneven behind & when i moved yards to one with an indoor school so i was therefore asking abit more of her she started getting really reluctant to work in any sort of an outline, it was when she started to object to me putting on her saddle ie biting which was out of character i deceided to have her checked out.

Full lameness workup & xrays showed she had a chip fracture on the end of her Tibia which had been slowly damaging her cartilage poor girl. She was referred to Leahurst where she had a Arthroscopy & removal of the chipped bone.

She has been home 4 days & is due to have her stiches out on wed, dont quite know how she will be long term, but poor girl was telling me & i am so glad i had her checked out.

Think your horse is definatly telling you and a visit from the vet is due.

Good luck and i hope you get sorted.

Thanks for your two replies, but if you read my post back you will see that I had the vet out to deem him sound to bring back into work about two months and the vet is BOOKED after the advise from my chiro as I thought it was his back bothering him which I now know is secondary from his hock. Also it states thatd I haven't ridden him for over a month due to knowing that he isn't right.

FWIW.. my horse was kicked (vet called same day) and although not lame at any point the swelling over the injury persisted beyond a week (I think) and at that point the vet (2nd visit) suggested x - ray which showed a chip out of the bone .. was advised at this point that either the chip would be absorbed / broken down naturally and the "dent" would heal over or if this didn't happen would involve an op to remove chip.. luckily the chip was absorbed / broken down naturally and dent healed over .. horse was on box rest .. well box with pen outside for week and then allowed turn out .. when we subsequently discovered the chip off the bone was advised not to work / ride although quiet turn out was ok.. some movement can be helpful in the healing process.

What has your vet suggested??? did they x ray to check if there is a chip / fracture of a bone?
