my horse was endoscoped last winter after developing a nasal discharge, heaves and head shaking so was put on a steroid inhaler for the winter and after been fine all summer he has started again.

The vet is recommending an investigation into what the allergy could be so this would mean having to take him to somewhere like Liverpool to be tested, has anybody had these tests done or similar?

any advice appreciated :)

Hi hun, my friend has a horse which headshakes starting about end sept threw to feb, last year he got MAJOR BAD!! to the point of been dangerous she had loads tests done but it never got rid of the problem!!

She is giving him 10 anti histamine tablets a day with german chamomile flower heads{dried} and wild garlic oil which she puts a few drops in a seprate bucket of water so he has a choice of what he wants to drink, his headshacking started 3 weeks ago and since we have fed him this he has totally stopped!!! out hacking we put a pair of tights over is nose to stop the pollum getting in his nostrels!!

Its worth a try and i hope this works for you xx

Have you changed anything in his feed or management recently eg have you started bringing him in at night or started feeding hay or started giving him/changed his hard feed?

My friend's horse had an episode of heaves last winter during a prolonged period of being stabled 24/7 because of another problem. 24-hour turnout, soaked hay and a change of diet seems to have done the trick for him.

Yeah he has antihistamine to stop his runny nose and the inhaler for relief. I have a nose net which does help and I may have to to try those herbs thanks!

He has been tested and we know he has an allergy just don't know to what exactly, he doesn't really get any relief turned out as it seems to affect him outside, he's on good quality haylage and dust free bedding and the wet is taken out everyday.

Last resort is to send him off to get tests done to try and find what the allergy is but you don't always find anything and there's not much info on it on the Internet

My 20 year old hunter had incredibly bad wind when he first arrived due to being very unfit and also bedded down on straw and fed hay.

Now he is far fitter, fed haylage, on shavings and given Winergy Ventilate. Sorted. Not sure whether that helps you at all but I found the Ventilate is miraculous. We also give horse sloppy food because things like Alpha A didn't help his wind. A&P C&C & oats.
