I’m potentially looking at getting a set (or pair for the fronts) of good boots for my horse. Has been barefoot for a few years, but only ever been in light work, and she’s not coping with stoney tracks at my new yard.

I’m aware you can get second hand ones, but where do I even start knowing what sort are the best. I know you have to measure them as well. Horse will be wearing them for light hacking and schooling to start with

Liz at Hoofbootique is excellent, too. She'll advise on the best type of boot, and you can trial them before committing, too. There are so many different boots, I couldn't begin to decide myself which to go for, but Liz has been a great help. Good luck.

All the boot shops are very helpful so the above, and urban horse, cannock chase etc. For measuring it is best if you take a photo of the hoof with the tape measure on it as they will be able to see what will best work shape wise or if you are inbetween sizes. It is also worth nothing if you think your horse twists on any of the hooves you want booting.

I have a personal preference for the low proflie styles of boot for anything more than a walk, I use easyboot gloves but back countrys are the same sole, renegades, scoots, the new swiss galoopers look interesting too.

Liz is fantastic; really committed to getting the boots and fit for your horse. The trails are invaluable.

the most important thing with any boot is traction. If your horse slips you will hate them as it is frightening. I will only consider renegades, scoots and gloves/epics because of poor traction in others.
